Why do networks always assume they know better ?

SuitsIt’s something that probably isn’t new, but it is here, and when you’re a TVoholic or just happen to love good television, even in small doses, it’s a disgusting thing to see. Yet it’s here, everywhere, and it is more and more frequent every day : Networks think they know better.

Always, in every network, you will find some stupid execs who love their very expensive suits, and think that if they got here, it means they know better. They know better than the creative minds behind a show what the show should be like and where it should go, they know better than you, viewers, what it is you want to watch. And it’s a funny thing, because those guys do their job in a TV network like they would an airplane company, or selling cars.

That it to say, they have no idea what good television is (and let’s be honest, they probably don’t even care), they don’t know how to write compelling stories, or create interesting characters, those things that will attract millions of people week after week and have us come back each week for more. But because they work for, because they are the network, they know better.

Something’s definitely wrong at NBC

JourneymanThey bragged about their new pilot-less process, ordering at least 6 episodes of new series from a script, without “bothering” by first having a pilot episode shot; they also love to say how they go international by co-producing series with other companies; not to mention how they love advertisers and are now asking them for lists of products, then ordering the creative minds to come up with new episodes or series to sell the stuff.

Clearly NBC is trying to innovate, or at least do anything they can think of to show they’re trying, they’re really trying, I’m not sure what it is exactly they’re trying to do, I’m not even sure they do, but they try hard, they never stop trying.

It’s possible I’m a pessimist, it’s possible I have this tendency to hate NBC, anything goes, but the more I read about what’s going on at NBC the more I think it’s not gonna be good, at all. And what really saddens me in this, is that I have a bunch of shows I love which just happen to be on NBC, hence my worries.

When they recently revealed their schedule for next season, NBC included on the list a new series called The Philanthropist.

Tom FontanaThe one-hour drama is about “a rebel with a cause”. The main character, Teddy Rist, is a billionaire who, after the tragic death of his child, decides to use his money, power and connections to help people in need. He wants to do good, and he’s ready to do anything that needs to be done to get there : “bargain with the self-righteous, trade with the nefarious and even tell the truth. Instead of spending $25,000 a plate at a fundraiser, he’s dodging bullets in third-world countries to hand-deliver vaccine. It’s a global adventure that will take viewers to the ends of the Earth and will inspire them as well.

What made this project quite interesting was the name behind it : Tom Fontana, well-known for his work on series such as Oz or Homicide, was executive producer, showrunner and writer of the show. Yes, was.
