(S01E23) It’s almost a requirement, as the season ends we need to get back to that series arc that turn Patrick Jane, otherwise light and funny, into a dark and dangerous character. Because as he said before, and I’m sure he means 100%, when given the chance, once he’ll find Red John, there won’t be no such thing as the law and bringing him to justice, all that will matters is revenge, and making sure he pays for what he did.
But of course, that is only for in a few years when the series will end, and until that we have a long road ahead of us, made of little (or not so little) clues as we did get with this episode. A new murder to investigate, and one that will be linked to the infamous serial killer of course, but one very unlike all his other crimes, in more than one way.

(S01E22) We all know that this show is about Patrick Jane first, and that while he’s only a consultant for the CBI, it is him who will solve the mystery of the weekly crime they’re investigating and who will, in the end, come up with a little plan to fool the killer into either confessing or revealing himself. It’s the way it always go, and by now we don’t even care to pretend that Lisbon is the one in charge.
And it’s fine, really, her role is to act shocked and apologized for whenever Jane will do something he wasn’t supposed to do, but that because he’s not a cop and doesn’t really cares for the rules he did anyways, and have the team either help him concocting his plan or do the boring cop stuff that needs to be done, because at the end of the day they still actual actual, legally admissible evidences (although sometimes, you have to wonder…).

(S01E21) Patrick Jane might be the star of this show, he can’t be the only one responsible for an episode’s success (or failure), the other players have obviously an important role to play as well. More than those working alongside of Jane, the CBI crew, the second-most important player might just be the bad guy of the week, the criminal Jane is looking for, his opponent.
And I believe that the reason this episode was such a good one, comes directly from this week’s opponent to Jane. The reason I think things worked so well and were so interesting wasn’t so much about actions, but motives. It wasn’t in what was being done, but how and why. I think the reason I enjoyed this episode as much as I did, was because of how similar to Jane himself his opponent was this week.

(S01E20) Yesterday it was Castle and today it is The Mentalist. Both shows share obvious similarities, starting with that they each have a crime to be solved at the center of their episodes each week, but that’s not really the reason we tune in and watch the show. The reason we do, is to see the main characters - here Patrick Jane – work their magic and have fun doing what they do, all the while solving that crime of course.
But if in both cases the solving of the crime isn’t really the most interesting part of the episode or even the reason we watch the show in the first place, it still matters of course. What does matter, is that it doesn’t suck, that it’s not completely boring and not making any sense, it needs at least that much not to spoil the whole fun. Unfortunately, this episode suffered from that same weakness/problem as did Castle on Monday…

(S01E19) The Mentalist is one of those shows where you’re not really tuning in to see a crime being solver and a murderer get caught, but more to see how the team of detectives – and, especially, their favorite consultant – will eventually get there. So if the case of the week is rather predictable it’s not the end of the world, and it might not even be that big of a deal.
On many occasions in the past we’ve been able to figure out who had done it (long) before they did, or at least before they arrested him/her/them as Jane usually knows quite early on as well, and it didn’t made the episode any less good, because the fun parts isn’t there. The problem with this week’s episode isn’t that it was very easy to figure out who was the bad guy, it goes deeper than that.
