Sorkin’s latest TV show, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, is now gone, canceled during its first season. And, just like pretty much the whole life of the show, this hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Studio60 was talked about, in bad or good ways, pretty much even before the first episode was ever written! And not just because it was a TV show about TV, and TV likes to talk about itself, but also because it was a show by Aaron Sorkin.
Now that it’s all over, things have cooled down a little, and in a recent article Sorkin discussed the reason of Studio60’s failure.

Shows: Studio 60
By fred | July 8, 2007
I think we have Jericho fans to blame for this. Ever since they successfully got their favorite show back on the air for a few more episodes, now hoping producers won’t screw them over, fans of others shows have since then decided that, to get a show back, all it took was to send some kind of food to executives.
First we had Veronica Mars fans, sending Mars bars hoping that would be the argument the CW execs were waiting for to change their mind and not cancel the show. And now fans of The Black Donnellys are joining in.
The Black Donnellys is the show that NBC put on the air to replace Studio 60, once they took it off the air. But that was only to took the Donnelly’s brothers off the air as well later on. I wonder if TV execs get thrilled whenever they announce that they’ll take a show off the air. I bet they do, especially if the show was good, and with only a very few episodes that actually made it to the air.
That’s probably why they do it. That, or they actually expect a new TV show to do better when its pilot first airs than CSI does now. Read the rest of “Stop sending food!” »

Shows: Jericho, Studio 60, The Black Donnellys

Now that the his latest show, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, is (finally) over, let’s take one more look back at that show before we completely forget about it.
When I first heard the premises of what the show would be, I thought that it could indeed be an interesting show. Unlike others, I never expected the show to be an actual comedy, because I don’t believe it was ever sold as such.
But I was interested in that show, especially also because it was made by Aaron Sorkin, and you can say whatever you want but the guy knows how to write some great dialogs, and pretty great episodes when he wants to.
I remember the first time I saw The West Wing, and it was just brilliant. And not just for one or two episodes. Of course just because you did something great once, doesn’t mean you can do it again.
Event in the same kind of show (A look at what goes on behind the scenes of, the West Wing or, this time, a live comedy TV show). Read the review of “Why I hate Aaron Sorkin” »

Shows: Studio 60
By fred | June 20, 2007
(S01E20) Ok so you know what? When I first read about Studio60, the latest Sorkin’s show, a new show about the behind-the-scenes, the making of a live comedy TV show “a la” SNL, I was pretty excited. And not just because I usually like Sorkin’s shows.
Then I saw a first couple of episodes, and despite it not being yet as good as it could be, and I was sure it would be, I really liked it? It had a lot of potential, and honestly, it was pretty damn good. Not necessary funny, but the show was never intended to be a sitcom, or even a comedy.
“Get over it, and enjoy it for what it is!” is how i felt by then.
There were many critics about the show, and I had my lists of complaints and such, but still it had good writing, good acting, Studio60 was a solid show with much promise. And I supported it all the way, including when they insisted to do the wrong things, but now, I’m over it.
Studio60 sucks.
Fans, just accept it, it is now a fact. And the last episode I saw was a bug confirmation of this. Even when they did that stupid silly shitty story where they got stuck on the roof, I was still behind the show. But it seems Sorkin and all the writers have now gave up, they’re not trying anymore. Shows: Studio 60
By fred | February 20, 2007
After last week episode I was confident with the future of Studio60. Well, let’s not be as positive as that, since certainly things weren’t done yet, but it did showed some great potential as they proved they knew how to do things right.
There was still a real challenge up : they now had to bring all that’s great into the actual stories of the show, not stucked on flashbacks. They had to know what to keep up and what to get ride of (Harriett), but there was hope. Because back when it started Studio60 had a pretty great quality level, because writers, directors & actors on the show can be great work, and because when people were raging at the show NBC still let it on the air, willing to give it a real chance.
I was quite anxious when watching the last episode (S01E16), and while watching it I got really torn between two different reactions.
Basically, it seems Studio60 is a show that always had a (strong) reaction on people. Some love it (count me in), some hate it (you can count me in at times, too – but overall I love it), but it didn’t leave viewers indifferent.
And further than this, I believe quite a few people really had a love/hate relationship with the show. Depending on the episode, and even within one same episode, at times you would love it, and at times you would hate it. Read the review of “Studio60: Love it or Hate it” »

Shows: Studio 60

(S01E15) So I’ve been saying how Studio60 was really on a bad road lately, and then came this episode. It wasn’t a complete revolution, I won’t say now things are back on a better road, but.
Yes, there’s a but. A pretty good but, even though there’s actually a but within that but. Men do I love but’s…
Anyways, this week we had another kind of show within the show in a form of a flashback. And to sum things up, it both worked & didn’t worked at the same time. Looking at what occurred during the flashback scenes, it sure worked. But looking at the flashback itself, and how it was part of the show, it didn’t.
It pretty much seemed to me like they realized that the show was really not in a good place, and they’d wish they could start over, forget about all the crap they wrote in the past episodes and start fresh, and that’s what they did!
Using the form of a flashback, they were able to forget about all the lame plots they made us suffer through during the last episodes, and made the show what it should have been in the first place.
And when they did that, one thing got pretty clear: they obviously know how to write a great show, they know what to do to make things great, interesting, funny even.
The show we had during the flashback was the one I was wanting to see when I first heard of Studio60, it was what I was expecting from Aaron Sorkin and his team, it is was Studio60 should be, always. Read the review of “What Studio60 could have been” »

Shows: Studio 60

Stuck. On the roof. They got stuck on the fucking roof. How ridiculous was that!? Oh. My. Good. That episode (S01E13) was pretty awful. I mean, I’ve always really liked & enjoyed watching Studio 60, but this time… Hey I got an idea : let’s get stuck on the roof! Men this episode was awful.
So yeah, Danny wants to talk to Jordan about all the recommendation letters he got her sent, recognize it was a bad idea and all. Basically, he wants to apologize to her. But they can’t talk on his office, its being re-paint, or right there cause people are walking by endlessly. And he’s got like, one word to say – “Sorry – so that needs a calm place and all. And he can’t “borrow someone else’s office for 2 seconds obviously.
So, they go up on the roof. And when this happened, and you think to yourself “Oh God this is ridiculous, along with a joke to yourself about watching the door not to get stuck, as it’s the most common cliché there could be.
And then, guess what happened? They did… get stuck on the freaking! Damn! roof! How retarded was that? I couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t believe it was happening, and on Studio 60 above all!
You know what ? This, is bad writing. And I don’t care that Danny Tripp (Bradley Whitford) mentions it. Mentioning it doesn’t make it ok, it just means that you knew how much it sucked, but you decided to go with it anyway. You were totally aware that you were writing bad stuff, that it was gonna be bad TV, but you went with it anyways.
Shame on you. Read the review of “Hey, let’s get stuck on the roof!” »

Shows: Studio 60
By fred | January 30, 2007
Ever since Aaron Sorkin’s new show, Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip, aired its first episode, there has been people voicing their opinions about how much they hated the show. Typical Sorkin, which is true; not realistic, probably true also; yes all those critics are true. Well most of them ; but it doesn’t matter.
Yes it is a typical Sorkin show, characters make references to or even quote some old unknown weird Greek psychiatrist while doing one of Sorkin’s famous walk-and-talks. And it never happens in realty. So what?
Doesn’t mean it’s bad written, or not entertaining. I actually enjoy watching the show. In all honesty I’ve always enjoyed Sorkin’s writing, but still.
It’s also been said that it simply is not funny. Not always true, although it is not always funny, that’s true. And yeah, those sketches they’re doing, are mostly not funny. But does this really matter?
Studio 60 is not 30 Rock. It is not a sitcom, it’s not supposed to be funny. Well, not all the time at least. It’s a bit of comedy, a bit of drama, it’s all that mixed together. And such format is nothing new on TV, anyone here ever watched Ally McBeal ? Wasn’t always funny, and I do mean during the first seasons, before the show sucked it was painful to watch. It was comedy at times, drama at others, and same goes for Studio 60.
With one tiny difference though, when it was comedy on Ally McBeal, you would laugh. With Studio 60, that is not always the case. Sometimes you don’t even really smile.
Of course, if you watch SNL you will see that, in real life, on such shows, you don’t always laugh either. Not every week. So here’s your reality, bitch! Read the review of “Studio 60 is changing shapes” »
