Do you miss quarterlife ?

QuarterlifeLast Tuesday, NBC was proud to “experiment” by putting on the air a show coming from the Internet, quarterlife. The show had already been available for free on Internet and its move to a big network was a huge failure, since according to Reuters with 3.1 million viewers the show had the “worst time-period performance in at least 17 years” on NBC, no less!

Only one episode aired on NBC, at 10.00 last Tuesday, and though it was planned to come back the following Sunday it did not, NBC took it off before another dramatic run. And surprisingly creator Herskovitz wasn’t really pissed at NBC, admitting that he now knew the show wasn’t made for it, and explaining that NBC’s fault was just to buy the show in the first place!

But the show isn’t going to stay away from the TV screen for long !

Quarterlife is no more

QuarterlifeWell, sure it was intended to be a drama, but since it failed at that maybe it’ll get a couple of laugh from the latest development : the show has already been canceled !

That’s right, only one episode aired on NBC, at 10.00 this Tuesday, but it did horribly ! With not even 4 million viewers it was not only bad, but according to Reuters it was Peacock’s “worst time-period performance in at least 17 years“, no less! In fact, more recent update numbers announce only 3.1 million viewers for the show !

Now, I knew it was bad and wouldn’t do well, although I didn’t expect it to do so terrible, but I gotta say I’m a little surprised NBC decided to yank it already. I mean, we’re talking about NBC here, don’t you remember for how long they let Bionic Woman on the air ??

Anyways, what’s funny about this if the explanation that creator Herskovitz gave for the failure of the show. Yes, he did blame NBC, but not because they didn’t promote it enough, not because they gave it a bad/dead time slot or anything like what you usually hear in such circumstances. No, instead he basically blamed NBC because, listen to this : they aired the show ! (How dared they!?)

Tuesday’s Numbers

Once again Fox easily won the night, both in total viewers and on the demo, thanks to a new installment of American Idol, most-watched program of the night way ahead of any competition. At 8.00 CBS was still able to keep up a good face with 11.2 million viewers in front of a rerun of NCIS, not bad : that’s 300 000 more viewers for The Eye while Idol had one more million viewers !

At 9.00 Back To You was back and had no trouble reaching a series high with 12.3 million viewers, which may sound good but it’s not, because it means the show lost more than half the viewers of its lead-in ! Totally make sense to me, though. Meanwhile According To Jim is still as low as usual pulling out only 4.6 million viewers (1.4 on the 18-49 demo), so it got renewed… Go figure!

Tonight On TV

* Schedule is filling up, but that doesn’t mean it’s with good stuff.

* At 9.00 ABC has a new According To Jim, followed by a new Carpoolers. I think now that the strike is over, those two should be put to sleep…

* Meanwhile on The CW comes a new One Tree Hill

* At 9.30 HBO has a new In Treatment : Tuesday is Alex day.

* And on Fox there’s a new Back To You, confirming terrible rumors that this show hasn’t been canceled. Crap!

* At 10.00 at least something good comes on, sadly no one seems to be watching. Anyways, a new episode of Jericho is coming, and you should watch because it’s good stuff!

* Finally on NBC comes a “new” show : quarterlife. But it’s not really new, it already “aired” online, since the show has been available for free on quarterlife.com for quite some time now. I did watch the first webisodes (that should make the actual first episode airing tonight) back then, and again as I said last time I fully understand why ABC rejected the project when it was first presented to them three years ago : it’s just not good.

Quarterlife to premiere on NBC February 18

QuarterlifeBecause networks are a bunch of stupid liars, while they might pretend not to need writers to get their business working, because they can fill the air with crappy games and shit like that, all of us TVoholics know better. In fact, so do they. Which is exactly why they’re trying to use other ways to add fresh writers’ work on their schedules, to get new scripted content : because they know that’s what people love the most, and because they know that’s what advertisers too, love the most.

Many networks are already looking at their cable sisters to steal good series - which is bad, really, because even when they don’t butcher the shows to make them more family-friendly, they’re trying to do without writers and attract supporters of the writers by using the writers’ own work !

NBC is desperate for new content : Quarterlife

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | November 19, 2007

QuarterlifeNBC just made a new deal to air in 2008 the new series from Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick, Quarterlife. You’d think that’s a great news at first, given how those names can have you remember of series like the great My So-Called Life, but you’d be wrong. Oh so wrong.

The show is already available for free quarterlife.com, at least the first episodes, and I watched them. I did, and I understand why ABC rejected the project when it was first presented to them three years ago.
