(S02E21) Make no mistake about it, that was it. The very last episode of Life, the last time we’ll ever see Charlie Crews and Dani Reese. I put up season finale in the title because that’s still what it officially is, but it clearly was more than that. It was the series finale, doesn’t matter how good the show is/was, or that it comes from NBCU, ratings are not good, not good at all, and with an infection of Leno at 10.00 it’s just maths : Life is over.
But at least we got something to feel good about : creator Rand Ravich and his team were not stupid enough to hope for a third season to the point of letting us hanging, frustrated and disappointed. While I’m sure they hope(d) for a third season, they also knew it was likely the last episode ever, and they wanted to give closure to the fans, make them feel good about the show when looking back.

(S02E20) I don’t really know what to say about this episode. The way I feel about it is nothing new, and what I have to say is pretty much what I’ve been saying all season, and especially for the past few weeks now that Crews & Reese aren’t even working together anymore. It’s just not Life. As I watched this episode, which had a good (albeit predictable) case of the week and I won’t deny a certain quality on this show, it was just a cop-drama, one in a see of so many.
It used to be nothing like one, this show was just fantastic, it was original, funny, creative, it was Zen and fruity. But now, now it’s merely a shadow of what it used to be, it’s like they took it all out, the originality of it, what made it different and so special, and we’re left with just another cop drama, and nothing more. There was no strong music moments this week, there’s obviously no partnership moments (which was the best thing of the show, and what it was all about, IMO), just a crime to solve.

(S02E19) To make a good cake, you need to all everything right. If you messed one thing up, if you forget just one of the many ingredients, it won’t work, it won’t be good. Maybe everything else was exactly how it should have been, but because for the end result to be good you need everything, take one thing out and it just doesn’t taste right, it isn’t good.
This week, that’s about how I feel when it comes to this episode of Life. I liked a lot of the things I saw, many which sounded very true to the show and what it should be, and used to be, but alas I didn’t fully enjoy the episode, because it wasn’t Life. And that, “only” because there was one thing missing, but that thing is as required as everything else to make it work.

(S02E18) On many occasions this season, I have said how disappointed I was with the new direction and tone the show had been taken, and how I missed what the show used to be like, back in season one. I will now admit that while I was saying those things, I never actually went back and watch the first season again, I was basing this on my memories of the first season only — not that it was very old, especially since I saw it more than once.
But the fact and the matter is, I never did go back to watch even one episode of the first season, to “really” compare the two. I’ll even admit that, after a while, I started to fear it, wondering whether or not after all this time of criticizing this new season and praising the first one, I might not have had a tendency to push things a little, embellishing the truth, turning my memories of the first season into a more perfect thing than it actually was.

(S02E17) It might not feel the same for everybody else, but as far as I’m concerned, Life is not really a cop-drama, not even the one with a twist. Sure, it looks like that on paper, but it has never been about the crime of the week, and finding out who killed this week’s victim. And it never was all about Charlie either, though he is without a doubt the central character of the show.
No, Life is about Crews and Reese, it’s about the two of them and how they work together. It’s never been about finding who did it, as it is about witnessing the two of them getting there, seeing how they work, together, as a team, as partners. Sure Charlie is the one with the troubled past (well, Reese used to have one just as messed up back in the days…) and the Zen thoughts, or the obsession for fruits, but it’s not enough. What makes it sparkle is Reese, and how she reacts to it.
