What will you be watching on Thursday nights ?

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | September 4, 2008

Thursdays are big, no question there, and this fall won’t be any different, though we will have to wait somewhat longer to see it in action. Still, with all the goods on that one single night, we might as well start to get ready and set our DVRs now…

First, a look at what’s to come…

* At 8.00 on The CW will return, maybe for the last time, creators-less Smallville, starting on September 18th; Ugly Betty will be back on ABC starting September 25th; on NBC the comedy night is back, with My Name Is Earl debuting its new season on September 25th with a one-hour episode

* At 8.30 NBC will introduce a new sitcom on its Thursday lineup, Kath & Kim, and something tells me that won’t be no Scrubs. The Australian import will makes its debut October 9th.

* At 9.00 the boys of Supernatural will be back on The CW, starting September 18th; on ABC the medical-soap Grey’s Anatomy will be back starting September 25th with a two-hour special; on NBC the hilarious The Office will be back September 25th with one hour-long episode as well; finally on CBS we’ll have the usual CSI coming back October 9th

* At 9.30 Tina Fey’s little comedy gem is back, though we will have to wait for 30 Rock as its season premiere won’t be on before October 30th

* At 10.00 on NBC it might be the last season of E.R. that will premiere on September 25th; on ABC we will have the UK import drama Life On Mars, having its series premiere on October 9th; and on CBS it will be another new UK imported series, Eleventh Hour, premiering on the same October 9th

* At 10.30 there’s another new series, FX launches a new sitcom from South Park writer Kenny Hotz, Testees, making its debut on October 9th

Why do networks always assume they know better ?

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | August 29, 2008

SuitsIt’s something that probably isn’t new, but it is here, and when you’re a TVoholic or just happen to love good television, even in small doses, it’s a disgusting thing to see. Yet it’s here, everywhere, and it is more and more frequent every day : Networks think they know better.

Always, in every network, you will find some stupid execs who love their very expensive suits, and think that if they got here, it means they know better. They know better than the creative minds behind a show what the show should be like and where it should go, they know better than you, viewers, what it is you want to watch. And it’s a funny thing, because those guys do their job in a TV network like they would an airplane company, or selling cars.

That it to say, they have no idea what good television is (and let’s be honest, they probably don’t even care), they don’t know how to write compelling stories, or create interesting characters, those things that will attract millions of people week after week and have us come back each week for more. But because they work for, because they are the network, they know better.

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | July 20, 2008

CalendarAt this point we have the fall schedule and premiere dates for all the main networks (ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and The CW) so now the only thing that remains is for you to search for the information concerning the shows you love/are interested in.

To make things easier for everyone, I took back the complete new fall schedule compiled before premiere dates were known and updated it. You will find here the complete 2008 fall schedule day by day, with all shows on their slot with their premiere dates included. That way you can see how [insert day here] will be, try to see what you’ll watch and what you’ll have set on your DVR, and when things will be back.

And because sometimes you want to know things the other way around, know what will be on at a given time, I’ve also included the list of all premieres dates ordered by date. With all that, hopefully you should have all the information you need to get ready for next fall.

ABC announce fall premiere dates, also included CBS, Fox and NBC fall premiere dates

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | July 16, 2008

CalendarABC just released their fall premiere dates, and if on some networks new episodes kick in as soon as early September, on ABC you’ll have to wait a bit longer to get your latest fix. Boston Legal is the first script series to come back, and that won’t happen until September 22 !!

Yep, that late. Could be worse though, imagine you were a fan of, say, Pushing Daisies or Dirty Sexy Money, then September won’t be easy on you, because they’re not returning to the air before October ! Though they do kick on on the first day of the month, if that’s any comfort… If you’re waiting for Samantha Who? or Eli Stone on the other hand, you don’t even get such comfort, as they will return respectively on October 6, and October 14 !

ABC new series are Opportunity Knocks, premiering on September 23; and Life On Mars, coming in much later, on October 9.

Interested in a full listing, followed by a complete listing of all shows premiere dates (ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC) ? It’s all after the jump !

Horizon Media makes predictions about next season’s successes and failures

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | July 8, 2008

FringeFall season is still month away, but if you’re a TVoholic if probably wonder which series will be a hit, and which will die before the end of the year ?

Of course no one really knows, but Horizon Media loves to speculate and, in their annual television report, go ahead and make their predictions. Sadly I haven’t read that report nor do I really know what they base their predictions on (did they saw the pilots for all series??), but let’s talk about it anyways, shall we?

Of course, the number one hit of next season goes to Fox, with J.J. Abrams’ Fringe. Now that an easy one, I think we can all agree on that one, it’s a no-brainer. According to Hollywood Reporter, HM predicts that the second highest-rated new show will be CBS’ Eleventh Hour.

I’m not really sure about that one. Of course, I haven’t seen the pilot, unlike Fringe, but it didn’t look that good/exciting to me, and one could also wonder whether or not it might sound a little to close to Fringe, people might compare the two shows, and in such a fight, if there can only be one, it will be Fringe.

The Good, The Bad And The Ugly… This Season For ABC

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | June 16, 2008

ABC(This week we look back at how each of the main networks handled things this past season, as well as looking at how things are looking up for the coming one. Agree ? Disagree ? Share your thoughts and grade networks in the comments below…)

The Good

This season ABC showed to be understanding of the situation, and decided to give a real chance to new series that had proven to be of quality, renewing Pushing Daisies, of course, but also Eli Stone or Dirty Sexy Money. And while I have mixed feelings over their treatment of Lost, overall it played out very nicely, offering us the best season to date and a fantastic 3-hour season finale ! Way to go.

Previews of new series to come

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | May 15, 2008

UnknownWe are right in the middle of the upfronts, and it’s a time when we have to see series go, sadly, but also when we get to be all excited about the new ones to come. Or, hopefully, we can find a few things to be really excited about, because it’s not always good. As new series are being announced, we also start to have promo clips, so let’s take a look at what we got so far.

I have to say that the two shows I’m most excited about so far are still the sci-fi shows coming on Fox, Fringe from JJ Abrams and Dollhouse from Joss Whedon. Those two look pretty cool, I can’t wait for them to show up. Sadly not much for those, but I’m not really sure I’d want to watch anything before I can watch the entire thing anyway…

Still, a few clips are here, so let’s have a look, shall we?

ABC Schedule for 2009

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | May 13, 2008

The new schedule for ABC is now official, and truth be told it looks very much like the old one, that that’s by design. As McPherson said, “We’re returning our dominant core group of shows from last fall. The few openings we had we’ve filled with the kind of quality programming viewers have come to expect from ABC, and we have a very strong bench.

Full schedule, recap and reactions after the jump!

Cancellation/Renewals Roundup: Boston Legal, New Amsterdam, Back To You

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | May 12, 2008

Boston LegalThe upfronts are coming, and pretty much all networks will announce which shows they have canceled, which they have renewed and which new ones they picked up. Even NBC is planned to make some Late Night announcement, probably that Jimmy Fallon (SNL) will take over Conan O’Brien in 2009 when he takes overs The Tonight Show as Jay Leno goes, well, we don’t know what Leno will do yet.

But many rumors are out already, from the renewal of Boston Legal thanks to the effort of creator David E. Kelley to the unsurprising cancellation of New Amsterdam, and a possible new home for Back To You.
