(S01E09) I’ve said in the past that I wasn’t exactly sure how I felt about this show, but one thing that everyone seems to agree upon is that there’s potential, a lot potential for Fringe to grow and become quite great. But it’s only that, potential. As in, it’s not quite there yet, it could be, we wanted the show to get there, but for the moment it is not.
It’s both a good thing and a bad thing. It’s good because it means there’s a great show underneath this, writers just need to figure out how to get it out and make it happen, but it’s obviously a bad thing as well, as it means so far - and we’re already 9 episodes in - they still haven’t figured out how to achieve it. Now when this episode opened, I had great hopes, things started to look pretty good… sadly, it didn’t last very long.

Shows: Fringe
In Series: Fringe Season 1

Some changes for the usual Tuesday night last night. For one, CBS did not win the night, ABC did, as the Alphabet averaged 2.6 million more viewers than CBS. But ABC didn’t stop there, because they also took the demo from Fox — not by much (4.5 vs 4.4) but still. Yes, with Dancing With The Stars Finale ABC had a great night, as the show was the most-watched program of the night, beating NCIS in viewers or House on the demo (though not opposing either).
At 8.00 things were as usual though, NCIS winning the slot in viewers with 18.16 million viewers (+150 000) vs 12.49 million for House (-500 000), but the medical hit-drama won the demo with a 5.1 (3.7 for NCIS). The really bad news of the night for Fox was Fringe, dropping to a series low with only 8.73 million viewers, 3.9 on the demo.

Shows: Fringe, House, Law & Order: SVU, NCIS, The Mentalist, Without A Trace
By fred | November 25, 2008

* Tonight nothing on The CW, and no Eli Stone on ABC either as Dancing With The Stars takes over, starting one hour later due to Charlie Brown…
* At 8.00 on CBS there’s a new episode of NCIS
* While on Fox there’s a new episode of House – Warning: it’s an “extended” episode, with a little less than 10 more minutes. So if you are planning on recording it, make sure it doesn’t stop at 9.00 but at least 8 minutes later.
* At 9.00 CBS has a new episode of The Mentalist
* And it’s at 9.08 on Fox that there’s a new Fringe
* At 10.00 CBS has a new Without A Trace
* While on NBC there’s a new Law & Order: SVU
* And finally on FX comes the series finale of The Shield

Typical Tuesday night, where CBS wins the night in viewers while Fox takes the demo, and it’s also one rare night where NBC get to do well, as least on the demo. The Peacock might be the only net (with The CW) not to reach 10 million viewers (8.62 million), yet it averaged 3.4 on the demo, coming second to Fox 4.8 and thus beating CBS (3.2) For the record, ABC tanked with a 2.7, which is actually better than last week…
At 8.00 we had the two winners : NCIS most-watched program with 17.98 million viewers, while House “only” had 13.03 million of them (+100 00) and yet won the demo with a nice 5.5 — compared to a pale 3.5 for NCIS. All the while 90210 on The CW went up 200 000 viewers and close to 3 million again, though not quite there yet (2.94 million, 1.6)

(S01E08) I’m not entirely sure how I feel about this show, as I explained last week. And as a matter of fact I’m even not sure how I felt about this episode, I don’t know if it was a really good one or not. I’ve said many times that this show failed, so far, to create real excitement within each episode, that it always relied on the same old formula to construct all episodes, which does leave a big mystery part out of the equation, as well as having this tendency to fall back on serialized plots to try to create a sense of excitement.
And at first look, this episode wasn’t different than the rest. It started like any other episode of Fringe and it didn’t seem to be going any place new, but then something happen. Something that we hadn’t seen so far, and that - confused as I am about the show - I couldn’t really tell if it was a great thing or not, and I’m still not quite sure how I feel about it, though I might lean towards great.

Great night for CBS last night! The network was clearly the winner of the night, getting close to 16 million viewers overnight (15.8 million), and while beaten by the strong duo House/Fringe on the demo, The Eye still did quite well (especially before 10.00)
Things started all the better with the most-watched program of the night, NCIS, pulling 18.79 million viewers (4.0 on the demo), no less than a new series-high !! Way to start the night, but that didn’t impress the good cranky doctor of Fox, as House might have been down 300 000 viewers, it still was up on the demo scoring a very nice 5.5 — best performance of the night on the demo.

(S01E07) Fringe is a good show, so far. I think it would be fair to say that, and while it’s not a complete hit or far from being what I’m sure many thought it would be, being the latest J.J. Abrams’ creation and all, it’s still a very good, modest hit. But it’s also very true to say it isn’t great, it still fails to become really appointment television, the thing you don’t want to miss and can’t wait for.
In the past that did try to move away from their formula, and this week kinda continued that way as, once again, the scientific mystery of the week was not based on Walter’s old work, which is always welcome. But, much like it’s done before already, Fringe still fails to become truly exciting on its own, and seems to always have to resort to the same tricks to get there.

The 35th Annual People’s Choice Awards Nominees have been announced, and for the most part there’s really not much to say, except that sometimes it feels even more wrong than the Emmys, which is saying a lot considering. Favorite dramas only include the major hits (CSI, Grey’s Anatomy, House) completely missing even the fantastic Lost and its mind-blowing season, not nominated at all.
Just like for comedies are missing the most hilarious sitcoms on the air — that’s right, no mention of 30 Rock, The Office or How I Met Your Mother ! How is that even possible ??
