What The Emmys Showed Us: The Reality Of Television

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | September 23, 2008

Howie MandelNow that the Emmys are over, it’s of course the time where everyone look back at what happened and tries to finds what it means for the world in TV land. Now, the show in itself wasn’t really good, I mean we had those five stupid hosts who couldn’t do the work on one. Not only that, but Christ does Howie Mandel ever shut up !??

I’m sorry, but the guy couldn’t stop talking, he was constantly there saying shit again and again and again again, I’m sure many people all over the world up to our Mars enemies were yelling, throwing stuff at and probably even shut down their TV because he wouldn’t stop. Plus, as a result we’ve seen how some bits were dropped, people got their acceptance speech cut off right in the middle, what a mess!

But it’s a fact, it’s the cold reality of television these days : networks don’t care about quality anymore, (most of) the industry doesn’t care about quality anymore.

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | September 22, 2008

EmmyAlright, so time to talk about the Emmy and who actually won I guess.

But first off, if you missed it or just because it’s so great you can never have enough of it, make sure to watch (again) Ricky Gervais & Steve Carell at the Emmys.

Right then, so let’s not waste any time and dive into it (in italic were my own votes, in bold are the winners) :

Why do networks always assume they know better ?

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | August 29, 2008

SuitsIt’s something that probably isn’t new, but it is here, and when you’re a TVoholic or just happen to love good television, even in small doses, it’s a disgusting thing to see. Yet it’s here, everywhere, and it is more and more frequent every day : Networks think they know better.

Always, in every network, you will find some stupid execs who love their very expensive suits, and think that if they got here, it means they know better. They know better than the creative minds behind a show what the show should be like and where it should go, they know better than you, viewers, what it is you want to watch. And it’s a funny thing, because those guys do their job in a TV network like they would an airplane company, or selling cars.

That it to say, they have no idea what good television is (and let’s be honest, they probably don’t even care), they don’t know how to write compelling stories, or create interesting characters, those things that will attract millions of people week after week and have us come back each week for more. But because they work for, because they are the network, they know better.

The Official Emmy Nominations

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | July 17, 2008

EmmyThere’s been much talk and then some about those nominations, as the top10 finalists lists have been made public, or find a way to the public eyes. But now speculations are over as the official nominees were announced by Patrick Harris and Kristen Chenoweth - both nominated by the way.

What to say ? Not many surprises, even with things that went wrong and the misses here and there. Not much love for The Wire, I think more was expected, but it’s a general trend : cable networks are kicking in with style (AMC, FX, etc) and HBO is really lacking some great hits nowadays. Sure, The Wire is still around, and Entourage hasn’t been forgotten despite being away for so long, plus the “experimental” In Treatment was noticed, but it’s not like they had a The Sopranos or Sex And The City anyways…

Emmy: Best Drama Actor/Actress Semi-Finalists

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | July 2, 2008

Breaking BadWell, today we have even more Emmy talk to do, as the semi-finalists for Best Drama Actor and Best Drama Actress are out. Well, it’s not really official but sources are trusted. Some good choices have been made, but there are a few names missing as well, sadly.

I’m happy to see Bryan Cranston, terrific on Breaking Bad, or Gabriel Byrne, amazing on In Treatment, on the list, and of course it’s great to see Hugh Laurie (House) there, even though the Academy never bothered giving the guy an award so far. At least it helps a bit swallowing the absence of Robert Sean Leonard as Supporting Drama Actor.

However, I’m really sad not to see Damian Lewis on that list, not just because I feel Life was the greatest new show last season, but because he was delivering one Hell of a performance, in a pure terrific British tradition, as initiated by Hugh Laurie. And, really, Patrick Dempsey ?? Okay he’s McDreamy and all, but really?? James Spader ?? Oh come one people… Matthew Fox on Lost way also way better!

Emmy: Best Supporting Drama Actress, The Semi-Finalists

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | July 1, 2008

Sarah ShahiAnd now the list for Best Supporting Drama Actress is out, and I’ll say that there are two big names I’m shocked not to see on that list, because I felt they should be actual nominees for the award : the first one is Sarah Shahi, from NBC’s Life. She’s been quite amazing the entire season opposing Damian Lewis, and I’m really shocked not to see her here. I guess it was to do with Life not getting lots of press somehow, even though it was simply the best new series of the season, hands down.

Well, I surely hope Damian Lewis won’t be overlooked either, because he is too doing some amazing job !

The second name I’m shocked not to see here is Mia Wasikowska, known as Sophie on HBO’s daily series In Treatment ! She was nothing but amazing, and I cannot believe she’s not on that list ! Eben more shocking to me, Dianne Wiest, from In Treatment as well, is. It’s not that she was bad, but I honestly feel Mia Wasikowska deserves the nomination a lot more, but I guess her name wasn’t known enough… what a bunch of crap!

More Emmy Semi-Finalist

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | July 1, 2008

Some Emmy Finalists have already been made public, and now a few more are out. The list of semi-finalists for Best Comedy Actress and Best Supporting Drama Actor. Once again those lists aren’t for official nominees, people need to vote so we can get the official five nominees; still let’s talk about it!

Many are commenting on how Teri Hatcher is missing from the list, while Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman and Eva Longoria Parker are all on the list. I’ll just say that, sure, it looks like a snub especially on the semi-finalists list, but where does it say all Desperate Housewives actresses have to be all nominated ? I don’t hear people complain that much when only a couple of actors or actresses from Lost are nominated, and not the others.

Top 10 Emmy Finalists

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | June 27, 2008

Emmy AwardThe Emmys have released the lists of top 10 finalists for best comedy and best drama series. It’s not the nominations, just a “pre-selection”, but there’s already some (big) surprises, like the inclusion of Family Guy in the best comedy series — never an animated series made it there, but this year creator-producer Seth MacFarlane opted to have his show run for the best comedy series, while submitting a special episode (Blue Harvest) to the animated category — as well as some misses.

I mean I really wanted to see Life on the Best Drama list, and I can’t believe that once again How I Met Your Mother isn’t on the Best Comedy list ! You won’t also find Desperate Housewives (but that makes sense to me), My Name Is Earl, Scrubs, or Heroes but it is to include the one that’d have been surprising this year.

2008 Television Critics Association Awards nominees announced

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | June 3, 2008

Mad MenBecause it’s not all about the Emmy’s, and because unlike with the Emmys we can hope here people actually watch TV, it’s always interesting to have a look at how the Television Critics Association Awards go. Nominees have been announced, and the closing chapter of The Wire and the first season of AMC newcomer Mad Men led the nominees.

Each show earned four nominations, more than any other program, and both are up for the prestigious Program Of The Year award. In the end HBO was the lead network with 10 nominations, closely followed by PBS with nine, NBC with eight, ABC and AMC five. Cable networks are doing pretty well, taking five of the six nomination for Program Of The Year and four of the five for New Program.

Where Are All Summer Shows Gone ?

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | May 28, 2008

Recently I went over the shows that will be returning this summer, but one thing very obvious about that list was all those that were missing. Not that summer is usually a time a crowed as fall on TV land, but more than one name was missing.

Why? Because due to many things, mostly the writers’ strike though, quite a lot of shows will not be returning before September, while others won’t be seen before 2009 ! And, some might not even return at all… So if you were wondering about where the Entourage, Californication, The Shield and other Rescue Me (amongst others) were gone, here’s your chance to find out. Though again, you will have to go through summer without them.
