Criminal Minds: To Hell… And Back (Part 1 & 2) [season finale]

Criminal Minds(S04E25-E26) Alright, so I have very mixed feelings about this episode. In fact, I think I want to split this thing in two, two different entities or whatever, two things to be considered completely separately, like they didn’t belong together — they just happened to have taken place on the same day/episode. Let’s open with the good, and the good was obviously this new case.

We know that the quality of an episode depends also for a large part on the case and, of course, the unsub they are tracking, and needless to say this was a pretty brilliant one. This had everything to make a terrific episode/case, and it did, starting with a nice little twist right at the beginning just to mess with us, for the fun of it.

Criminal Minds: Amplification

Criminal Minds(S04E24) When you do what they do, investigating and tracking serial killers for a living, it’s easy to see how you could get affected emotionally by all the terrible things you see, as well as how you might find yourself in a dangerous situation, life-threatening even. It’s something they have to just accept as part of their job, and it’s nothing we haven’t seen before, but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen again, or that when it will it won’t have an impact.

Just because you know none of them will die, this being a TV show and all (although, the end of the season if pretty close…) doesn’t mean writers can’t work things well enough to make a scene really emotional and very effective. And just because this episode was quite predictable, doesn’t mean it wasn’t enjoyable.

Criminal Minds: Roadkill

Criminal Minds(S04E23) All the many unsubs we get to see on this show have their own motives and ways of killing people, they don’t always use the same weapons to get it done, but there was something about this one unsub and the way he was killing his victims that made the entire thing sound, to me, a lot different than what we usually get. Whether it was the weapon itself and the way it was used, somehow – and despite everything else – it felt less dark to me.

It might also be that, while there was of course still a personal element to the crimes, as they’re often if not always is, last week was a very strong episode, in which we got to focus on the unsub and his way of seeing things, as well as his unusual connection with the blind kid with whom he felt close, and that “bound” between them, or the way he killed his victims, is like the opposite of what this new unsub was doing.

Criminal Minds: The Big Wheel

Criminal Minds(S04E22) Not all episodes are the same obviously, and they don’t all inspire the same things either. Even two episodes that are both good and enjoyable might have very different effect on you, especially on this show where there isn’t a predefined standard of what a good episode is, how it should end or what should happen during the course of the investigation.

It’s all about the unsub, and with each new personality comes a brand new world, one that our team needs to enter in order to save people, and very different worlds can create completely different episodes, each of them still being pretty awesome. And just because it was great, doesn’t mean it inspire a lot to comment on…

Criminal Minds: A Shade Of Gray

Criminal Minds(S04E21) Well, if there’s usually a great quality on this show, and the troubled times of Gideon’s departure are long behind, that obviously doesn’t mean that from now on every episode if a guaranteed hit, there still can be misses, and this one was clearly one of them. I’ve enjoyed most of the season, and recent episodes have been pretty solid, but I was incredibly disappointed with this one.

And it’s not even a case of high expectations I might have had, or that because it came one hour later than usual I expected something different – after all, it was a relatively dark episode with an unsub like you don’t see everyday. But quite a few things really didn’t work for me, many of them falling under the category of me being disappointed by our team and things they missed.
