(This week we look back at how each of the main networks handled things this past season, as well as looking at how things are looking up for the coming one. Agree ? Disagree ? Share your thoughts and grade networks in the comments below…)
The Good
This season ABC showed to be understanding of the situation, and decided to give a real chance to new series that had proven to be of quality, renewing Pushing Daisies, of course, but also Eli Stone or Dirty Sexy Money. And while I have mixed feelings over their treatment of Lost, overall it played out very nicely, offering us the best season to date and a fantastic 3-hour season finale ! Way to go.

The new schedule for ABC is now official, and truth be told it looks very much like the old one, that that’s by design. As McPherson said, “We’re returning our dominant core group of shows from last fall. The few openings we had we’ve filled with the kind of quality programming viewers have come to expect from ABC, and we have a very strong bench.”
Full schedule, recap and reactions after the jump!

The writers’ strike has had an impact on television and many shows. Yes, all main hits like CSI, Grey’s Anatomy or House are back and doing well, but they’re just not doing as well as they used to a few months ago, before that whole mess. It could be the weather, for some it could be the new time slots, but chances are the strike had a part to play in this, whether it just drove people away from TV, and allowed them to realize they didn’t actually miss that show they used to watch religiously and thought they couldn’t live without.
But according to The Hollywood Reporter’s James Hibberd, it might be a win for some shows, because since even the big hits don’t do as well as before, networks might be inclined to give second chances to more shows than they would have otherwise. So, is your favorite show on the list of the shows on the bubble likely to be renewed, or are you still screwed ?

* You have probably heard of this already, but one of the Darlings from Dirty Sexy Money won’t be seen as much next season.
Samaire Armstrong, who plays Juliet, hasn’t left the show, but she won’t be a series regular next season, only a recurring character, so you can expect to see a lot less of one of the twins.
* Another indication that Cashmere Mafia will not be renewed : one of its star, Lucy Liu, is in negotiations to join the cast of another ABC drama, Dirty Sexy Money, as a series regular.
Liu is said to play an attorney, but it’s not known whether she will be working for the Darlings, or against them.

Many shows already have been renewed for a new season, and yet probably as many are still waiting for an official statement about their future. Of course, as is always the case in such times, fans are anxious and worry for their favorite shows, especially the ones the network doesn’t seem to like so much, or the ones not doing that great in the ratings, despite being really great shows.
Recently Michael Ausiello compiled a list of shows currently hanging in the balance, giving for each of the their “Odds of Survival” rating, somewhere from 0 (it’s dead) to 10 (it will be back). Here’s that list, plus a few more comments by yours truly…

Many shows have seen their fate settled already, but for quite a few the future remains uncertain. Taken from Hollywood Reporter, here are the latest buzz on those shows. Note that, of course, this is nothing official and all subject to change…
In short, here’s the most important things with first, the bad news :
- After that stupid movie, NBC is looking to get Knight Rider back into a full series…
- It seems that Reaper could not come back next season. I don’t get that whole “pilot was good but after that not so much” crap, the show has been really fun and actually managed not to get stuck with a given formula, it’s evolving nicely, and more important it was always funny! New ratings might play a part in The CW’s decision, but putting new episodes on Thursdays against Lost is pretty much not wanting the show to do well…

Now that the strike is over, lots of shows are (finally) getting canceled, more or less officially, on every network.
* I’ll start with one that actually really pleases me : CBS has canceled Cane. The show is done, and I’m happy about this because it could be good news for Lost ! I’m happy not because I thought the show wasn’t good, even though that’s true, but because I sure hope that now Nestor Carbonell can find its way back to Lost, because we need to find out more about the never-aging Richard Alpert !
* Still no official word yet from NBC, but according to different sources from Michael Ausiello the Peacock has finally decided to put crappy Bionic Woman to rest.

Alright… so there wasn’t much on TV last night, and Fox once again had a new American Idol, so it’s pretty much like Tuesday : all other networks combined couldn’t even start to intimidate Fox and its 28.7 million viewers overnight!
At 8.00 while Idol was heading towards 30 million viewers, no one could each 9 million viewers, Deal Or No Deal coming second with only 8.9 million viewers. An hour later Idol was now over 30 million viewers, and on the second place we were down to 7.7 million viewers for Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

* At 9.00, nothing.
* 9.30, and he have a new In Treatment on HBO
* And finally at 10.00 comes a new Law & Order on NBC, and what will probably be not only the season finale but the series finale as well of Cashmere Mafia, on ABC

Of course, last night was another huge win for Fox, which with another combo of American Idol (24.6 million) and Moment Of Truth (14.5 million) was not a winner as much as it didn’t play on the same level as did the “competition”, even though that Moment Of Truth keeps loosing viewers every time.
CBS used to have dramas doing well in reruns, but that’s not always the case anymore as the repeat of Criminal Minds was beaten by both ABC (Supernanny, 8.8 million) and, of course, a new Law & Order: Criminal Intent on NBC (9.1 million). Added to their Big Brother doing pretty poorly and getting smashed by NBC’s Deal Or No Deal (11 million vs 5.8 million) and CBS is probably real happy that the strike is over.
