Why do networks always assume they know better ?

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | August 29, 2008

SuitsIt’s something that probably isn’t new, but it is here, and when you’re a TVoholic or just happen to love good television, even in small doses, it’s a disgusting thing to see. Yet it’s here, everywhere, and it is more and more frequent every day : Networks think they know better.

Always, in every network, you will find some stupid execs who love their very expensive suits, and think that if they got here, it means they know better. They know better than the creative minds behind a show what the show should be like and where it should go, they know better than you, viewers, what it is you want to watch. And it’s a funny thing, because those guys do their job in a TV network like they would an airplane company, or selling cars.

That it to say, they have no idea what good television is (and let’s be honest, they probably don’t even care), they don’t know how to write compelling stories, or create interesting characters, those things that will attract millions of people week after week and have us come back each week for more. But because they work for, because they are the network, they know better.

The Good, The Bad And The Ugly… This Season For NBC

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | June 19, 2008

NBC(This week we look back at how each of the main networks handled things this past season, as well as looking at how things are looking up for the coming one. Agree ? Disagree ? Share your thoughts and grade networks in the comments below…)

The Good

This season NBC had some really good series on, and not only that but they had simply the best new series of the season : Life. Some very good new series (again, Life, but also Journeyman) and some very good returning series (30 Rock, The Office, …), at first it really looks like NBC might be a winner.

(Side note: For all fans of Life out there, there’s a new fansite around, The Path To Zen, on which you can find (among other things) a really great & interesting read about how Life could become a big hit, if NBC believed in it! I highly recommend the read, especially if you like the show…)

Adding to that the renewal of newcomers Life and Chuck, both deserving a second season for sure, or finding a way to save fan-favorite Friday Night Lights, NBC looks like a winner.

And yet, they’re not.

The Death Of Canterbury’s Law and Bionic Woman…

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | March 20, 2008

Canterbury’s Law* Canterbury’s Law is pretty much dead. The show hasn’t performed good once, and was a complete failure on the demo. Yet in a surprising move Fox did not just took it off the air, but it’s clear that they don’t have much faith.

Next Monday at 8.00 New Amsterdam will have a much better lead-in : a rerun of House. Sure, it’s a rerun, but the cranky doctor always performs well, including in the demo, even in rerun. At least he does, comparing to Canterbury’s Law numbers. This might be a nice opportunity for New Amsterdam to grow its audience, but they really need fix the writing for that to happen.

Cancellation roundup!

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | February 21, 2008

Nestor CarbonellNow that the strike is over, lots of shows are (finally) getting canceled, more or less officially, on every network.

* I’ll start with one that actually really pleases me : CBS has canceled Cane. The show is done, and I’m happy about this because it could be good news for Lost ! I’m happy not because I thought the show wasn’t good, even though that’s true, but because I sure hope that now Nestor Carbonell can find its way back to Lost, because we need to find out more about the never-aging Richard Alpert !

* Still no official word yet from NBC, but according to different sources from Michael Ausiello the Peacock has finally decided to put crappy Bionic Woman to rest.

After The Strike, When Will Your Favorite Shows Return ??

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | February 11, 2008

Mysterious ClockNow that the strike is (almost) officially over, now that everyone will be back to work this Wednesday, it’s time to make a first update of the list I compiled a few days ago already to answer the questions we are all facing now :

Will our favorite shows be back this season ? How many more episodes will we get ? When do we get them ? What’s the smoke monster ?

I won’t repeat what I said last time about what shows might be back soon (the big hits : House, Grey’s Anatomy, CSI, etc) and which are likely not to return this season (the new ones : Life, Chuck, Dirty Sexy Money, etc) and let’s start the updated list right now !

UPDATED on Tuesday, February 12.

After The Strike, When Will Your Favorite Shows Return ??

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | February 8, 2008

Mysterious ClockWord is that the strike might be over very soon, as soon as this week-end end. This would mean that by Monday, people would be going back to work. Let’s not get our hopes hight until anything is said, but in the mean time let’s pretend this is a done deal : what does it mean for our favorite shows ? When will they be back this season ? Will they even be back this season ?? What shows are we talking about here ?

There’s no shame to admit you may have forgotten about a few shows, it happens to everyone, even How I Met Your Mother creator Carter Bays is getting confused. “It’s been a long strike. I can barely remember all our characters’ names, much less what we were planning to do with them. Is our show the one with Jim and Pam ? If so, we’ll probably have them hook up. Awkward!

You know what’s so great in what he’s saying ? He’s actually talking about going back to work ! If writers too are trying to talk about the strike in past tense, we might start to hope a little, I guess.

Strike Update : How will you favorite shows be affected ?

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | January 28, 2008

Let’s start this week with an update of our famous grid of how the strike affects your favorite series. As you’ll see, many series are now completely MIA, and quite a lot only have very few episodes before leaving us as well… Let’s hope that strike gets resolved soon, because even if it does we’re still in for weeks of nothing!

So again you will have a first chart with as many series as I could get info about, and for each of them how many episodes already aired, how many should be done and waiting in the can (written & produced), and then what we all care about, how many are left - as of today, 01/28/08. I’ve also added how many episodes had been ordered.

34th People Choice Awards - The Results

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | January 9, 2008

People's Choice AwardsLast night were hold the 34th Annual People Choice Awards, sort of. Because with the strike, and promises of picketing and, therefore, not one single nominee showing up (except maybe Jay Leno…) it’s quite a different kind of show that took place on CBS.

There was no real event, no red carpet, no audience, no celebrities, pretty much no show. What you had was Queen Latifah realizing she got screwed big time as this is no where near what she was offered/agreed to do, and a awful lot of clips from the past years, when things were fun, as well as pre-taped acceptance speeches for winners. Sounds like fun ? No ? Guess what ? Well, I didn’t really bother, but I’m sure it wasn’t !

Anyways, the list of winners are right below, in bold, while my original votes are in italic.

Strike Update : How will you favorite shows be affected ?

Well today seemed as good a time as any other to update the grid of how the strike affects your favorite series done in the past already.

New Series Of 2007 : The good, the bad, and the ugly…

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | December 31, 2007

As the year 2007 goes, everyone is making their list of best and worst of the year. Given how I don’t really like such list, especially because it means going over two half-seasons of TV with series we haven’t seen in quite a while (Lost) and new ones we’re crazy about (Life), it’s just weird. That, plus I didn’t prepare anything throughout the year and didn’t feel like going over it all, yes I’m lazy.

Anyways, that’s not the point. The point is, I did not do a best/worst of list, instead I decided to simply go over all the new series of the season, all those I actually watched that is, to see how things went down.
