(S04E01) Last night was the season four premiere of Weeds ! Yes, the great little show about drugs (sort of) is back as our favorite summer fix, and it’s about time ! And as everyone was aware of, I would assume, we’re in for lots of changes. Because the last time we saw Nancy, she was ensuring that her house would burned down during the fire that was taking over Agrestic/Majestic, spilling gas all over the place and moving on.
I have not hidden the fact that I was quite worried about this new season, which would see the loss of many, starting with Heylia and Conrad, or the oh-so perfect song from the opening credits, Little Boxes. Well, the actual opening credits is going away as well as a matter of fact, since the Botwins are moving away and not looking back.
So I had my worries, and then came this episode.

Shows: Weeds
In Series: Weeds Season 4

(S04E02) Changes are still happening on Weeds, at least on the outside. Last week the show was back for its fourth season, and with it we saw the Botwins move to a new place, though not really a new life. But as a last reminder of their past, and what the show used to be like for three years, we had one last time an opening credit sequence, with the traditional “Little Boxes“.
Not this time.
No, from this point on we’ve moved on to a new season, Nancy and co have moved on to a new place, and there are no more little boxes. Instead, what we will get now, if I’m not mistaken, are each time one “card” that will illustrate what the episode will be like, or give an idea of what it’ll be about, a first sign of things to come.

Shows: Weeds
In Series: Weeds Season 4

(S04E03) A new episode of Weeds went by, another one of those new ones which come with no more credits, no more singing, and I have to admit I do miss my “Little Boxes“. I know it may sound a little silly, and it is true that more shows every season go that way and do not use opening credits anymore, or very brief ones, and I don’t have any problem with that.
But here’s the thing : Weeds used to have one, and when a show has a theme song associated with it, removing it is like removing a huge part of the show’s soul. Call me crazy, but while the first scene before is usually great and hilarious, I just feel happy and all excited as soon as I hear the first notes of the them song for The Office, whenever I watch an episode. Right away it sets me right in the mood, and I just feel better, and I sometimes start singing along… but I shouldn’t mentioned that last part.

Shows: Weeds
In Series: Weeds Season 4
By fred | July 8, 2008
(S04E04) Alright, so after last week’s episode of Weeds, the overall impression for this new season wasn’t all that good. It was a completely different location for Nancy and her family, but other than that we all failed to see anything new. Not only that, but the show was nowhere near as good as it once used to be. As a matter of fact, let’s be honest : up until now episodes had been quite boring (at times).
This was probably due to already many misdirections, such as dealing with a dying grandma and how to get ride of her, her son, and that whole plotline. Which also resulted in the show being quite heavy on the drama. Sure, Weeds has probably always been in the dramedy category, a mix of both drama and comedy, but originally - and when it was it his best - the show was/is a comedy.
Its heart and soul is in the funny department, and we all missed that, a lot, didn’t we?

Shows: Weeds
In Series: Weeds Season 4

(S04E05) This season was supposed to be brand new, the show was reinventing itself as Nancy and co were moving away from the little boxes into bigger troubles. And it took a while, and it wasn’t really all for the best, but slowly things are eventually starting to shape up it seems. Albert Brooks was brought in so give Nancy and her family a place to stay, I don’t really see what else he brought to the show, and we’ve seen her trying to find a new job.
But, if Nancy is always willing and asking to do the very risky thing, she wants to see the drugs and sneak it in and sell it, the fact and the matter is, she sucks at it. There’s no question there, and it was perfectly illustrated during her first test drive through the border. She couldn’t possibly have done worse, and just like for us, it didn’t take Guillermo very long to realize that fact - even though I’m sure Nancy still thinks she would do a great job.

Shows: Weeds
In Series: Weeds Season 4

(S04E06) Aww.. Weeds. This is the little show that was to be completely different this season, because they were re-inventing it, or, at least, starting fresh as everyone was moving away for the “little boxes” of Agrestic into a brand new place, with new people, new problems, and brand new weed too. That was the plan, but more and more I feel like this is just like last season all over again.
And I don’t only mean this Nancy didn’t evolve or learn anything, again, I don’t only mean she keeps doing the exact same stupid mistakes, again, now I also mean that just like last season, after a few episodes that were possibly good and showed potential for the show to grow into something more, it just falls back onto itself and pull the same crap once again, being boring and really not so good, again.

Shows: Weeds

(S04E07) I think this episode has a very misleading title, because it makes it sounds like things are possible, and in fact it even has that little sound that says it’s possible to do new things, better things, to improve what’s been done before, to change from mistakes of yesterday and prepare a better tomorrow. That’s what this little title seems to imply with those three little words, and that couldn’t be further from the truth, really.
It’s not really new, it’s been around for a few weeks now, this feeling that despite everything that has been said about this new season, despite the relocation of the Botwins and their friends, things weren’t getting any better. In fact, it was the same load of crap we’ve been getting for way too long last season already, and we had enough of.
I really wanted to see this season be an improvement over the past, and the show be great & funny again, but alas, we’re far, far, from from it.

Shows: Weeds
In Series: Weeds Season 4
By fred | August 5, 2008
(S04E08) Last week I didn’t had some nice words for this show, and I stand by it. Last season it was the same, at first during a few episodes I thought we had an interesting situation, a starting point from which something, something new/different from what’s been done previous seasons, something good could be done. And it was with regret that I saw the season fade away into depressing boredom to end up having me convinced it had been the worst season to date.
This season had its fresh start, a brand new start in another place with new people, everything was new and it was a chance to start out fresh and be exciting again. I had serious doubt about the whole thing after reading about it, but after the first few episodes I had hopes again… How silly of me, because since then it’s all been crushed again, and we’re back to an horrible sensation of waste, waste of good ideas, waste of possibly interesting situations, waste of funny characters, and as a result waste of my time.
Unfortunately, this week only confirmed those feelings.

Shows: Weeds
In Series: Weeds Season 4
By fred | August 12, 2008
(S04E09) This season of Weeds has been quite disappointing overall, really, because much like last year after a start where you could see promise of a better land and hope for may new possibilities, a return of the funny twisted stories and characters you used to love back when it premiered, it soon fell flat into boredom, at best. This week, this week was very much a mixed bag.
On the one hand, it was a pure continuity of what we’ve had the previous weeks, the same crap that, really, makes you wonder why you’re still watching this show. On the other hand, it had a few good moments, and (I felt) a much welcome comeback of humor. It wasn’t much, but it felt pretty good. Didn’t restore my faith in the show or anything, not even close, but it felt like for a moment they took a break for this now usual boring mess to get back to the roots of the show.

Shows: Weeds
In Series: Weeds Season 4
By fred | August 19, 2008
(S04E10) Been a little late on this one, but we’re finally here. The fact that I couldn’t be any less excited about this season of Weeds wasn’t really the reason I watched this episode so late, but it might as well have been. It might be hard to realize now, but this used to be a really fun (and funny) show that was very easy to enjoy every week, you were looking forward to your new dose week after week and it was no disappointment.
But for a few seasons now, things have not really been the same. And this season, despite its “reboot” with the move outside of Agrestic, quickly fell back to what we already witnessed last year and so : it gets incredibly boring, it’s rarely - if ever - funny, and watching the episode you don’t really have a good time no more, instead you’re quite stoned by how pathetic this whole show and its characters have come down to…
