The Cleaner: Pilot

The Cleaner(S01E01) More and more cable network are coming up with new series these days, and there’s even a quality that you sometimes wishes to find in the big network’s show. One latest addition is The Cleaner, new series from A&E starring Benjamin Bratt as William Banks, a guy who’s hit rock-bottom from addiction and, after making a “deal” with God and getting a second chance at life, starts to redeem himself by helping other people out of their addictions.

That’s for the premise, now about the show. The first thing I’d like to say is that this was a pretty solid pilot episode, and that isn’t flawed with the usual things you get from pilot episodes. They didn’t pull out the enormous unbelievable case just to make things more exciting, they didn’t try to do too much and in the end simply get us confused, and there’s quite a “real” feeling to it. With its lights & color, this episode sets the tone of the show from the get-go and it works nicely.

The Cleaner: Rag Dolls

The Cleaner(S01E02) Last week we got introduced to “The Cleaner”, aka William Banks, and his crew. The deal is Banks used to be a drug addict, he knows everything about being a junkie and hitting rock bottom, but he got a second chance, he’s clean, and he’s helping people now, it’s his calling. To help him in his mission are a bunch of people, all ex-drug addicts as well, who got helped by Banks and are now working with him helping others.

Their whole purpose is to help people suffering from addiction, should it be drugs, gambling, sex, or anything else. At least, that’s what the press release said. Because last week that’s really really what the episode seemed to be about, but it was a pilot and we needed to have all characters introduced and that can sometimes get in the way. This week, no more such things, we’re diving right into the cases and yet, it’s still the same.

It’s not really a complaint, just a remark: call him “The Cleaner” is you feel like it, but at the end of the day Bank is simply a P.I.

The Cleaner: Meet The Joneses

The Cleaner(S01E03) After the two first episodes, I wasn’t too impressed with this show, which in many ways did not managed to grab my interest really. I’ve also said a few times that while we’re always sold the idea of Banks and his work as helping people getting ride of their addiction, that’s not really what we were shown so far. Instead, Banks and his crew only had to locate their client and send her/him to a rehab center. In other words, it was more a P.I. job that was getting done.

This week things changed a little, because all along we knew who was having a drug problem and where she was, it wasn’t about locating her, it wasn’t about some P.I. job - well, a little at first still, but there was more to it. That was a good move, and yet I’m not really sure I like this episode, much less the show.

The Cleaner: Chaos Theory

The Cleaner(S01E04) I guess the question for me at this point isn’t so much about this episode, but the show in general. It was a new series, it could have been interesting so I tuned in to check it out. And I know it’s only been four episodes, that’s really not much, but it’s enough for me to see that I don’t think this show will be what I first thought it might be, or look like, and that what it’s shaping up to be might not be something I’m interested in.

I’ve said before that while we were sold on the idea that Banks was the savior, the one who helped people kicking out addiction, he was only finding them, “kidnapping” them and driving them to the nearest rehab center. That hasn’t really changed, and quite frankly I don’t find that very exciting. Also, it was meant to be addictions, all kinds of addictions, but so far it’s only drugs.

Sure, you got your speed, your crack, your cocaine, your heroin, there’s lots of different kind of drugs out there, with different kinds of addictions. Still, it’s always the same, more than you think.

The Cleaner: Here Comes The Boom

The Cleaner(S01E05) Alright, so yes last week I basically said I was thinking of dropping this show and not watching it anymore, but we’re only at episode 5 and it’s not like there’s so much on TV right now it’s hard to watch it all, so I kinda tune in this week, again. I have to say that, as I started watching, I was asking myself why I was watching this show again, I really wasn’t sure I wanted to go through with it.

But I was sitting there and decided to at least see how it would go, and had it been as boring and uninteresting as last week’s episode was, I would have quit halfway through (if not sooner). But here’s the thing: this episode was actually quite better than previous ones. Sure, it’s still about drugs, of course, and there are still things I do wish we wouldn’t have to go through (Banks’ personal problems, read mostly how his teenage son in behaving), but it was better than (I) expected !
