(S02E01) Watch out, the geeks are back! I’ll be honest, I didn’t really miss this show over the summer. Or so I thought… But the fact and the matter is, as soon as I started watching this episode, I realized how wrong that statement was. Damn, how much I’ve been missing those funny geeks!
This show doesn’t try to be anything new, it’s a typical show about a bunch of geeks and a hot girl living next door, it has all the usual cliché of the genre and many reasons it probably shouldn’t work or make you laugh, but then there’s Jim Parsons and his oh-so perfect interpretation of Sheldon. Let’s be clear, as far as I’m concerned this guy is the show, he’s the reason it’s funny and why I watch, and I’m so glad he’s back!

Shows: The Big Bang Theory
In Series: The Big Bang Theory Season 2
By fred | September 30, 2008
(S02E02) Last week Leonard told Penny that he was fine with her not being smart, which might not have been the best thing to say. This came after Penny was getting uncertain about a possible future for the both of them, because she thought she wasn’t smart enough for Leonard, that they didn’t had enough in common. Whether it is true or not, we all knew one thing from the minute, last season, they started going out : it wouldn’t last.
It’s a thing with sitcoms, if not most TV shows, things don’t change. Change is bad, change means people don’t get what they’re used to get every week, and starts how trouble starts. Especially true with sitcoms, and probably an even stronger reason as to why they didn’t had a chance, over they differences or completely different styles and interests.

Shows: The Big Bang Theory
In Series: The Big Bang Theory Season 2
By fred | October 7, 2008
(S02E03) There’s been some changes taking place on this show for this new season, specifically the addition of Sara Gilbert to the cast. It used to be that the only female regular on the show was Penny, but she was like any other characters, because she was not a geek, or a scientist, or anything like that. Leslie on the other hand is a scientist, and she’s probably the best thing the show could have, as she’s some sort of female version of Sheldon, whom as we all know makes the show.
So it’s no surprise that, once again, while the main story may not really revolve around Sheldon himself, not directly, he still is the central character of the episode, the one everything goes through one way or another. That’s how the show works, that how it makes us laugh. But this week, Sheldon had some competition, and it did not necessarily came from whom you’d think it would have…

Shows: The Big Bang Theory
In Series: The Big Bang Theory Season 2
By fred | October 14, 2008
(S02E04) I think most people would agree with the assertion that Sheldon is the pivotal element of The Big Bang Theory. It’s not necessarily that the show couldn’t survive with him, though that’s very likely, but he is simply brilliant and - of course - hilarious. Especially portrayed by a Jim Parsons who couldn’t have been a better fit for the character.
But Sheldon isn’t the only character on the show, and while we’re not talking Heroes-cast here we don’t usually spend that much time with some of the supporting characters, like Raj or Howard. It’s not really a bad thing, they fulfill their sidekick roles perfectly, and the mystery that surrenders them, since we don’t know that much, just makes for better comedic situations.

Shows: The Big Bang Theory
In Series: The Big Bang Theory Season 2
By fred | October 21, 2008
(S02E05) We all know that on this show, there’s plenty of geeks, it’s the premise of the show. But only one of them stand above the rest of them all, only one of them isn’t aware of this status, as he really believes he is simply better than anyone else, his friends or not. Whether or not that’s why we love Sheldon so much and he is the one making the show, I won’t say, but those are facts.
Another fact, though, is that this season he was supposed to be “challenged”, he had to get some competition as a new geek was coming into town, someone else that, just like him, thinks or knows to be superior to most of everyone else, and who’s not afraid to just say things how they are, regardless of what most people would do taking into consideration things like manners and other people’s feelings.

Shows: The Big Bang Theory
In Series: The Big Bang Theory Season 2
By fred | November 4, 2008
(S02E06) One of the things I mentioned last week, was that it was yet another episode without Leslie. Not that we were used to see her all that much last season, but when Sara Gilbert was added to the cast of the show it seemed logical that we would now be seeing more of Leslie, with real stuff to do and actual plot lines involving her one way or another, not just have her show up from time to time to say a couple of “dumb-ass” to Sheldon and leave.
And yet, it seems to be all we’re getting. Now while I understand that there’s an existing dynamic in place on the show, and that they probably don’t want to break it or anything, I do wish - again - we would see more of Leslie, and that if/when we do, she wouldn’t just show up, say Sheldon is a dumb-ass, and move away. If that’s all they have for her, we’d be as well without her, I mean…

Shows: The Big Bang Theory
In Series: The Big Bang Theory Season 2
By fred | November 11, 2008
(S02E07) This episode was constructed with two stories going on at once. The main one, of course, had to involve Sheldon. I say of course because that’s they way this show works, Jim Parsons is brilliant as Sheldon and always makes the show, there’s no question that without him, this would not be funny and have been canceled long ago. Evidently the main plot had Sheldon in the middle of it, and as expected it was hilarious.
The secondary plot however, wasn’t so good I thought. And that starts with the very basic premise of it, because it seemed completely and unbelievably out of character for both Howard and Raj, but especially Howard. There’s no question that he is indeed “creepy” as per every definition you have for that word, and whether or not in involves military satellites.

Shows: The Big Bang Theory
In Series: The Big Bang Theory Season 2
By fred | November 18, 2008
(S02E08) All along I’ve said how this show was owned by Sheldon, there’s no question that he’s the funniest of all character and makes the show week after week, which is probably why pretty much all episodes are Sheldon-centric, even when the main plot isn’t (supposed to be) about Sheldon directly. I guess there’s a risk that this show could turn into “The Wacky Sheldon Show” and focus more - if not only - on Sheldon’s eccentricity instead of coming up with more “creative” stories.
In the mean time, maybe that’s what people want ? The first season was mostly about Penny and her relationship with Leonard, but now that this is in the past, focusing on Sheldon (even better, his interactions with Penny, as illustrated brilliantly in their recent battle) is probably what people are looking for when tuning in to this show, and the side-kick characters that are Raj and Howard are probably best left in the unknown.

Shows: The Big Bang Theory
In Series: The Big Bang Theory Season 2
By fred | November 25, 2008
(S02E09) If you remember the show back when it premiered, Penny wasn’t at all integrated into the geek tribe, obviously, as she just moved in, and since Leonard was interested in her he was probably the one to get to interact with her the most. Things have evolved though, since then they went on a date and moved on, and now, even if Raj still can’t talk to her, Penny is part of the gang now – So much now she even makes fun of Lassie Raj for his inability to talk to her.
One thing that changed as well, is that she might get to interact a lot more with our good friend Sheldon. And it’s a good thing, a really great thing in fact. Because if Sheldon remain the central character of the show and the one who makes it funny, really, I don’t think anyone works better than those two together. Whether it is them being friends, trying to have an actual discussion, or fighting one another to death, Penny & Sheldon are a great team!

Shows: The Big Bang Theory
In Series: The Big Bang Theory Season 2
By fred | December 9, 2008
(S02E10) I think we all know that the one geek who makes this show works, is no other than Sheldon. It’s just the way it is, either he is the one source of all things funny, or it is to see how people (try to) deal with him that makes it work. But maybe that’s not what the writers first intended when they created the show, maybe they wanted it to be first about Leonard, and about his love life.
I’m just saying this because the first season was all about his crush on Penny, how he eventually went out with her and then the whole thing was dropped and everybody moved on — that fast. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, I actually like that Penny is now fully part of the gang, as I said last time. But we’re still not done with Leonard’s love life, as now we need to deal with Stephanie…
