Quick Review: The Big Bang Theory, Californication

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | October 31, 2007

bigbang01.jpgA couple more shows I got to watch. I know they aired on Monday, but I don’t get to see the that soon, and only managed to do so today. There is a good one, and a bad one. We’ll start with the good one.

The Big Bang Theory

So, maybe you know this one, maybe you don’t. I would totally get it if you never bother to watch it : this show is about two geeks theoretical physicists meeting their new neighbor, who happens to be a girl. We actually follow those two and a bunch of their friends, all geeks, in their daily life trying to behave like, you know, regular people.

Which isn’t that easy for them, because, well , they’re geeks. But the real kind, they look and sound like geeks, they argue over Superman’s plot and for Halloween they dress up as the Doppler effect. And really, it’s funny. It really is.

The Big Bang Theory: The Dumpling Paradox

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | November 6, 2007

The Big Bang Theory(S01E07) I’ve said it already, this show might not look good at first. But if you actually sit down & watch it, of course you’ll see that those nerds aren’t exactly like actual nerds, this isn’t a documentary. But they’re way more nerdy than Chuck might be, and look, act and talk much more like actual nerds. And yes, of course, it’s filled with stereotypes and clichés. But (a) that doesn’t mean those doesn’t exists, ever watch Beauty & The Geek ? And (b) it actually is funny.

There are moments where you just find it stupid and too cliché or predictable to be funny, but most of the times the show really is funny. I think pretty much in all episodes I’ve watched, and I watched them all by now, there’s always been a few laughing out loud moments. Some episodes are better than others, like with every other show, and maybe here when it’s bad it gets real ugly real fast, worst than elsewhere.

But when it’s good, it’s as good - if not better - as elsewhere. Would you really pass on that ?

The Big Bang Theory: The Grasshopper Experiment

The Big Bang Theory(S01E08) This show might not look so funny, on paper, when you never watched it. Because it’s about a group of geeks or nerds who can’t deal socially, but when a hot girl comes live next door things change as she’ll teach them about real life. Or something like that, as it’s described.

And geeks being transformed as they meet someone, so they can enter the real, social life is something TV likes to do, a lot. Just like on The O.C. where a geek got to experiment life and become someone after he met his new best friend who had no trouble being popular, and in the end he even got the girl, cutie Rachel Bilson. Or you have Chuck, another nerd who happen to go out and play with the popular kids, or CIA agents, after he got his brain filled with info. And it looks like he may even get the girl, who may also be the gorgeous Rachel Bilson ! Damned, being a (TV) nerd has its advantages after all.

You also have Reaper, where a somewhat nerdy guy got to play with the popular kids, or hunt escaped souls from Hell after his soul got sold to the Devil by his parents. In the end it’s still very much alike, but all those shows also have one thing in common : their characters being geeks is not and does not make the show. On The Big Bang Theory, though, it kinda does.

But don’t go away yet!

The Big Bang Theory: The Cooper-Hofstadter Polarization

The Big Bang Theory(S01E09) Usually, shows from Chuck Lorre aren’t really my cup of tea. And usually, shows portraying nerds - or theoretical physicists - are filled a lot more with boring clichés than with actual humor. But like with every rules there is an exception, and The Big Bang Theory is just that. Oh yes, it does feature a group of nerds, and yes some of them are stereotypes more than actual characters, but somehow it works.

Not to mention that at least one of them, who goes by the name of Sheldon, is nothing but hilarious. He’s not just your typical arrogant geek who thinks he’s better than you and makes references to principles pretty much no one ever heard of, but he actually is funny. It’s not that he intends to be, but he really is.

The Big Bang Theory: The Loobenfeld Decay

The Big Bang Theory(S01E10) I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again : if it’s a very common thing for TV shows to (try to) portray geeks and nerds, and only fail completely at it, either having them to end up way too “cool”, morph away for “nerdism” very quickly, reducing them to some stupid clichés and stereotypes, or a mix of all this at once, one thing this show managed to do is to make it work somehow.

And if the writing has to be with it, of course, I’m pretty sure that it’s also largely due to Jim Parsons and his interpretation of Sheldon, because he can make quite old jokes work, and even as predictable as things get, he will make you laugh in the end.

The Big Bang Theory: The Pancake Batter Anomaly

(S01E11) Not every shows might have come back yet, but a few of them have. Many of those are on CBS, and that include the entire Monday comedy night ! And that’s really a great thing, not just because it’s good to have any show back, but also because lately the new sitcoms we’ve had to deal with, well, they weren’t really funny.

Whether it was The Return Of Jezebel James, a complete failure I’m sorry to say, Welcome To The Captain, an insult to any other sitcom out there, or even lately Unhitched, which had its moments but wasn’t really that good, the new sitcoms have pretty much all failed to make us really laugh. And while we’re still waiting for the NBC comedies to return, at least on CBS they’re here already, and they’re still funny.

The Big Bang Theory: The Jerusalem Duality

The Big Bang Theory(S01E12) I know not everyone likes this show, and based on its premise only I can see why you wouldn’t be interested in it, but if you do, you’ll probably end up liking it, because as it turns out, it is funny. It’s not a show where you’ll get great character developments and smart complex stories like you can find in The Office or How I Met Your Mother, I would not call it a great show to be honest, but it does makes you laugh, and for a sitcom that’s about the most important thing to do.

As I’m pretty sure anyone who watches the show will tell you, there is one force that actually makes this show work, one guy that stands out above the rest and without whom the show would probably suck incredibly, his name is Sheldon. He’s hilarious, he’s (usually) at the center or everything funny and that’s why it’s not uncommon to see episodes based around him.

The Big Bang Theory: The Bat Jar Conjecture

The Big Bang Theory(S01E13) From the very first day I started watching this show, it was obvious who was the comedy force on the team of nerds, or physicists, we get to witness week after week. It’s not to say that the other character are useless or cannot be funny, but Sheldon is the one that drives the show and generates the very large majority of all laughs.

So much that it isn’t uncommon to see the episode be centered, one way or another, around Sheldon. Yet, last week, while this was still the case I found the episode not to be as funny as the show usually is. It was unsettling, because while it happened in the past it was because the show tried to do without Sheldon for too long, this time it wasn’t the case, this time Sheldon was failing us, sort of.

The Big Bang Theory: The Nerdmabelia Scattering

The Big Bang Theory(S01E14) A new Monday, a new dose of geekiness coming to your screens. I know some people don’t like The Big Bang Theory that much, and I agree it’s not the even greatest sitcom of the night, and it does use classic rules and boring clichés one too many time, but if you’re able to give it a actual chance you’ll realize that this show has something going for it : it is funny, really funny.

That said, ever since it got back after that awful strike finally ended, I’ve always felt that the episodes weren’t all good. It wasn’t bad and it made me laugh most of the time, but there was always something that didn’t work, it wasn’t as good as it used to be last year. And with this episode, I think we can officially announce that this is now over !

The Big Bang Theory: The Shiksa Indeterminancy

The Big Bang Theory(S01E15) There’s a thing about The Big Bang Theory, it’s a show that does rely on clichés and stereotypes quite a lot. I won’t say it’s a good thing, cause clearly it isn’t, but it usually isn’t a bad thing either because they somehow found a way to make it work, to make us laugh, without really caring that a few things are a bit of a cliché here and there.

And it’s all to the credit of the show to succeed at that. But, with that said, that doesn’t mean that no matter what they do, they’ll actually succeed at making us forget, or at least not care, about how common it is. Case in point, in this episode they didn’t always managed to achieve that.
