Scrubs: My Jerks [season premiere]

Scrubs(S08E01)The more things changed the more they stay the same…” That would be the leitmotiv of this new - and probably final - season of Scrubs. This is likely to be the end of the series, as both star Zach Braff and creator Bill Lawrence have said this would be their last year, and I don’t think the show could survive such loss. Especially if (many) others leave as well, and recent news already have Neil Flynn (the janitor) casted in pilot for ABC’s new comedy The Middle

But if this will be their last year, everyone at Sacred Hearts is more than determined to make the best of it, as Lawrence said they would tune down the goofiness and return to more “believable” characters, more real and less cartoonish, like in the first years of the show. Plus, after years of crappy treatment from NBC the show is now on ABC, and JD pointed to the new logo exclaiming how new it was, and in a shinny new HDTV format to make it even better!

Oh, and the show is stronger than ever.

Scrubs: My Last Words

Scrubs(S08E02) Okay, so forget anything you might have read or thought about Scrubs and its new season after the first episode, because then came this one. While the first episode was a perfect season opener, with the full cast included and all the laughs you could expect from it, this second episode felt probably more like what we will be getting this season - read not the whole cast was featured, as a way to reduce costs - and still was a perfect example of what fans have known ever since : this isn’t a show like any other.

Because there is not a lot of shows out there that can deal with a dying man, his fear of death and his last words and thoughts in the so brilliant and touching way Scrubs managed to do it here. But, the real wonder of the show might just be that this ain’t a drama, and while it obviously can do drama better than series whose job it is, Scrubs is a comedy, and yes, this episode was funny, more than that even.

Scrubs: My Saving Grace

Scrubs(S08E03) If you’ve been a fan of Scrubs ever since it started, with the show now in its eighth season you are doomed to see things comings. It will happen, sometimes the plots of a new episode will resemble the one you’ve already seen, so the important part to make it good, the thing that will make us enjoy this new take on a story we’ve already seen, sort of, is that it works for the characters involved, that it sounds true, and more importantly that it makes us laughs.

For instance over the past 8 years it’s safe to say that Dr Cox and Dr Kelso have had their disagreements, they’ve fought, and they’ve hated each other most of the times. It’s no secret, just like we’ve also seen them showing signs of respect for one another, because they both know, as we do, that each in their own way are good doctors, and good people.

Scrubs: My Happy Place

Scrubs(S08E04) Sure there are rumors about another season, a ninth season of Scrubs that would go on without creator Bill Lawrence nor star Zach Braff among others, and probably focus on the new interns introduced this season (of which we still haven’t seen much, if at all for most of them, this week). But we all know that, as it is now and has always been so far, Scrubs is all about JD.

It was about him becoming a doctor, and the show continues to be narrated though his eyes and inner thoughts. JD is a central element of the show, and whether you like it or not his relationship with Elliot has also become a rather important part of it as well. And looking back it hasn’t always been handled in the best of ways, let’s be honest.

Scrubs: My ABC’s

Scrubs(S08E05) So… if you’ve been following this season of Scrubs, this episode might have felt somewhat odd and out of place, like it didn’t really belong there. Not that it didn’t feel like an episode of Scrubs, but it’s on the continuity side of things that it didn’t feel quite right. And after looking into it, I actually found out that it makes sense, because those weren’t supposed to air in that order.

This episode, My ABC’s, was apparently actually originally written as the season premiere, while the next one - My Cookie Pants - was meant to be the second episode. But instead, they decided to make some little adjustments both in those episodes as well as in My Jerks and My Last Words and to invert them, thinking (I guess) that the later were stronger episodes.

Scrubs: My New Role

Scrubs(S08E07) Things are evolving at Sacred Hearts, and outside. Last week we saw the premise of it, but now it’s officially done : Dr Cox is the new Chief of Medicine, he’s the one in charge, and by definition you know that will not be limited to a new title, it just can’t be. And if we’ve seen that Kelso wasn’t just a mean angry old guy, but that it was the job who changed him, doesn’t take much to wonder how Cox is going to deal with it.

But before we go into that, I’ll confess something : I’m losing track of the way some of the new interns are supposed to be. Take Katie, Elliot’s intern, now because episodes haven’t aired in order and all that, when she showed up this week I found myself not sure whether she was supposed to be a mean manipulative bitch or not, liked or not, pretentious or insecure…

Scrubs: My Lawyer’s In Love

Scrubs(S08E08) This season and for budget reason the entire cast isn’t feature in all episodes, even though they’ve so far always managed to work it and make use of secondary characters so well that you barely miss whoever isn’t featured that time, and often you’ll notice one or two of the main characters missing. But there’s one that has always been and is likely to always be there : JD.

It’s how the show works, and why with Braff leaving after this season it wouldn’t have been a good idea to continue the show furthermore, and it’s why JD is always there, even a little, because we’re getting this through his eyes (mostly). But this time, JD was a secondary player, he wasn’t even close to being one of the main characters.

Scrubs: My Absence

Scrubs(S08E09) There’s been talk about a ninth season for Scrubs, even though it would have to be with creator Bill Lawrence or without Zach Braff, and this episode might have been a little indication of what that would be like. To reduce costs not every cast members appear on each episode, and if so far JD was always featured, this week he was nowhere to be seen.

And while the episode wasn’t any kind of bad, I think it would be fair to say it lacked a certain something, that something you also expects from Scrubs. Sure, the absence of JD allowed for a few jokes, some of which really worked, but there were also a few times where it would have been better if JD could have been seen, even for just a moment.

Scrubs: My Comedy Show

Scrubs(S08E10) In the previous episode we’ve seen what happens when, for some unknown reason, JD and Eliot have to be separated. It might not be the first time they’re together, but even after all those years their love for each other never failed them, it is now stronger than ever and makes it almost physically impossible for them to deny it, hide it, or be separated for too long.

But with JD nowhere to be seen during the last episode, they had to be separated. Now there was another couple that had to be separated and didn’t even get to spend the whole time on the phone, and I am of course talking about JD, cheating on Eliot with Turk. Unless it’s the other way around.

Scrubs: My Nah Nah Nah

Scrubs(S08E11) It’s been a while since we last saw Scrubs, but finally the show was back - on a new night and with only one episode a week, so it’ll last longer. That’s the good news of this schedule move, the “bad” news is that with only one episode on, if it doesn’t work all that well, there no way for the show to redeem itself until next week.

And, alas, this episode wasn’t all that good. I’m not sure I could exactly list all the reasons why, but this episode felt a bit off, and different from what we had been getting so far this season, which was pretty good. But this time, it was a miss.
