Reaper: A New Hope [season premiere]

Reaper(S02E01) Finally, after a few months off to party and look back at all that happened last year, the Devil was back, and so were – of course – Sam, Sock, Ben, and Andi. This season premiere was a very good start for this new season, re-introducing the whole premiere of the show as well as setting up new things for the rest of the year. Last season things got better & better as time went by, and now that we’re back it seems a little bit of cleaning and adjusting has been done.

If it first the show had a formula that each episode seemed to follow more or less closely, with Sam having to hunt down a new escaped soul each week, by the end things got better, the formula was gone and – even better – a little bit of serialization came into play, as Sam was not only finding out buried secrets about his family but also found himself part of a conspiracy to bring the Devil down, no less.

Reaper: Dirty Sexy Mongol

Reaper(S02E02) Now that the premiere is behind us and we’re going back to a normal weekly schedule, it’s time to have another look at what’s going on in the world of Reaper. Because it’s no question that things aren’t exactly the way they were last season, just like certain things were left untouched. That could have been understandable, because it was a season premiere, many things had to be addressed, and not everything could be during that one episode.

But now that another episode went by, it becomes clear that while certain new things and directions are interesting, other things are clearly not really working and I think should be dropped sooner than later, and also we have those big topics no one seems to be willing to address for some odd reason.

Reaper: The Sweet Science

Reaper(S02E03) We all know the drill, some evil soul escaped from Hell so Sam and his buddies will have to hunt him/her down, and use the vessel to do their job. That’s the general idea, but things aren’t always as easy as that, it can go wrong and the unexpected can happen any time, for a lot of reasons. And this week, it seems that the writers have decided not to follow the rules (or formula) without any more wait.

So yes, we had a new soul to send back to Hell for Sam, all that while dealing with whatever crap Sock was pulling out at the Work Bench, but this was a very different episode, and – dare I say – maybe the best episode of the season so far (though, yes, we’re only 3 episodes in, so they’ve more than enough time to do even better!). Many stories going on at the same time, so let’s have a look at each of them separately :

Reaper(S02E04) Michele Fazekas & Tara Butters. Those are the names of the writers who penned this episode, and while watching it I just thought that I needed to get those names and mention them, as a way to congratulate the entire writer team working on this show. Maybe The CW doesn’t value it all that much and sees it as nothing but a mid-season show, but it’s much more than that.

It’s brilliant, and it’s also freaking hilarious! It used to be, last season, that Sock was clearly driving the show, he was the comedy force of the show there was no question about that. Sock hasn’t changed, and he’s still hilarious, but he’s not alone. This week, pretty much everyone had some killer lines that had me laughing out loud, from Sock to Nina to Andi to the Devil himself, they were all on a roll, it was fantastic, and so far the writers managed to make this season look even better than the last!

Reaper: I Want My Baby Back

Reaper(S02E05) This show deserves to be more known and recognized, because it surely is a lot of fun! So far this season it has delivered strong and funny episodes one after the other, and it certainly didn’t stop this week. For a moment this season, one might have feared that some elements from last season might have been dropped or forgotten, replace by brand new ones.

But since then the writers proved that wrong, and past elements had either been addressed or found their way back into the plot. It’s great, but adding that to the newly introduced ones, and we have a lot of things going on, lots of plot involving lots of characters. As a result, not everyone episode can reference everything, and for instance a new and interesting twist introduced very early on this season has since then not been mentioned once, while you’d think Sam would be very much into it.

Reaper: Underbelly

Reaper(S02E06) I guess this was doomed to happen. It was too easy, we had it too good, it couldn’t last. So far this season, Reaper hadn’t only be back on the top of its game, it also was possibly better than ever, delivering what looked to be its strongest season with awesome, hilarious episodes one after the other. Now, what were the odds of that continuing uninterrupted?

I’m guessing not too good, because this week they did not. The flow of awesomeness got broken with this majorly disappointing episode, that actually started pretty good. It opens in a pure Reaper fashion, Sock and Sam are lazy and the Devil is having fun messing with Sam, the usual. But then, as time went by, things took a wrong turn only to end really really bad.

Reaper: The Good Soil

Reaper(S02E07) If during the first episodes of the first season, there was some kind of a formula found in each episode, the writers managed to break away from it, and by now we’re long gone from those days. There’s still one thing that hasn’t changed, though, and remains pretty much exactly the same as it used to be, and that thing is Sam. Sam didn’t want to become a reaper and send escaped souls back to Hell, he’s not a bad seed, just had bad luck (thank you dad, both of them).

And it doesn’t matter that he knows what he’s doing and who he’s doing it for, it doesn’t matter he knows where those souls escaped from, he can’t help himself but to see the good in them, and try to do the right thing. He knows, he just has to know the Devil isn’t going to let one soul wander free because it “feels right” or for any other reason for that matter, but he always has to try.

Reaper: The Home Stretch

Reaper(S02E08) It’s funny to see how much this show has changed from its first season, and if in the beginning there might have been concerned about how each episode seem to follow a formula, clearly this season there is no such thing as a formula, unless it reads “stay away from that old formula” or something. It’s up to a point where – and I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, I actually enjoy this so far – the hunting of the escaped soul of the week is not the main issue, if it is one at all.

This week, there wasn’t one, two or even three stories all at once in this episode, but no less than four stories. Four different stories, and writers managed not only to make them all fit and to have them all cross paths and affect one another like it once was done on Seinfeld and the likes. Four stories, and one escaped soul as always; But as I said, if each week there’s a new soul to send back to Hell, this just isn’t what the show is all about anymore.

Reaper: No Reaper Left Behind

Reaper(S02E09) This season of Reaper has been pretty awesome so far, and it had and continues to evolve and goes into direction one might not expect. Also, the old formula of the escaped soul of the week hasn’t been around much, they always found a way not to commit to it, so much that by now you almost expect Sam not to have to chase a soul, or just not to do it for some reason.

Instead we have some other stories to focus on, stories about personal relationships, which may or may not include demons, as well as the ongoing idea Sam has been obsessing about (although not too much) : he wants out, he needs to find a way out of his deal with the Devil. He doesn’t know how, but he’s learned for sure that it was doable, and he won’t stop until he succeeds — well, you know, or dies/gets sent to Hell.

Reaper: To Sprong, With Love

Reaper(S02E11) On this show, some things do evolve and others just stay the same, or find a way to quickly go back to normal. Take the workbench for instance, Ted got fired and Andy took over, and that could have been an idea to use to get her something to do, something else than breaking up with Sam every other episode. But soon enough she was demoted and back to square one, and of course they brought Ted back as manager.

Which, actually and given the whole sexual harassment issue and why he got demoted to begin with, is clearly an odd choice (don’t tell me there isn’t another employee that could have promoted). So now we’re back to where we once were, and I’m not sure it’s such a good thing, especially when that place wasn’t too good hence why the changes to begin with.
