Privileged: Pilot [series premiere]

Privileged(S01E01) After the return of PTC favorite Gossip Girl and the latest (and pretty bad) “reinvention” of 90210, last night we were presented with the latest in the teen-soap about the poor kid coming in to live among the (very) rich from The CW : Privileged. Once again I’m not really the targeted audience for the show, but I don’t really care that won’t stop me, and I have to say I hadn’t hear some great things about the show — nor did the promos I had seen look much promising.

Unsurprisingly, the show opened with the usual clichéd situation of the central character loosing everything and having to go get a new life in the middle of the richest people in town. None of that was really good, not the “joke” about the “vajayjay”, not even the introduction of Megan into her new life style.

But that doesn’t mean I didn’t like the show

Privileged: All About Honesty

Privileged(S01E02) So while I assume many return to 90210 once again, and I’ll admit it’s sitting on my DVR, I’m not really into that show. Privileged on the other hand has a nice start, and while flawed there was a charm to the show (and to Megan/Joanna Garcia) that was enjoyable. So here I am, back for another week and ready to let the show win me over.

Last week, things ended not on a high note for Megan, as she met with a forgotten sister she didn’t seemed to be such in good terms with, while in the middle of a party where she had already plenty on her plate. This week, we started right off where we left, in the middle of said party.

Privileged: All About What You Really, Really Want

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | September 24, 2008

Privileged(S01E03) Privileged isn’t about rick kids, not directly. Of course, twins Rose & Sage are two girls from a very rich family, and the show is about them and how they’ll manage to get through this school year and improve their grades, because they need improvement - even though Sage apparently always gets A’s everywhere, so really it should only be about Rose, but who cares.

The reality of the show is different, however, because it’s all about their tutor, Megan. The show isn’t about the girls but Megan, and how she will managed to become a writer, deal with her love life and, of course, get the girls to study some more. And that’s about the only reason this show might be worth watching and actually pleasant, JoAnna Garcia.

Privileged: All About The Power Position

Privileged(S01E04) There’s a bunch of shows about teenagers out there, actually mostly they’re all about rich, very rich teens, and then one poor little hero in the middle of it all. It’s nothing new, and it makes for a lot of the series on The CW, for better or for worse.

The thing with Privileged, at least that’s how I feel so far, is that unlike all the other shows it isn’t really about teens, because the main character is, of course, Megan, the tutor. Megan isn’t a teenager any more, but she is the main character of the show. As a matter of fact, the show is more about her than it is about anyone else. And if Sage & Rose, the rich girls she’s supposed to help, are never really far away, I’m starting to think that the show would be much better without them.

Privileged: All About Friends And Family

Privileged(S01E05) While it might not be my favorite show of the genre, and to be honest not even my favorite one on Tuesdays (as I like Greek better), Privileged is nevertheless a pretty good show, and one much better than its lead-in will ever be. Last week’s episode was a bit of a disappointment to me, because while I knew the show could have some great things to offer, they weren’t really there.

Which is why I’m so happy to report that things got much better this week, for an episode that did address some of the main issues I have with the show, issues that are quite pivotal to how the characters work at that. To be quick, I think this was not just a really good episode, but also the best episode of the series so far.

Privileged: All About Appearances

Privileged(S01E06) We’re in episode six already, which means that, even though not all episodes take place one week after the previous one, it’s now been quite a while that Megan is the twins’ tutors and you would imagine that she’s getting used to how things work and she might start to get a sense of how everyone feels towards others, and how they work as a family.

But it doesn’t really seem to be the case, does it? With the exception that she can’t deny Sage hates her, because she’s basically said that to her face so it would be impossible not to get that one right, Megan still tend to think of them as a “normal” family, or a perfect family even, close to not really what she knows first hand, but what she might have dreamed of having…

Privileged: All About Haves and Have-Nots

Privileged(S01E07) Alright listen up, this was the seventh episode of the show, a show which has yet to received a back nine order. The CW is interested in the show, as illustrated by an order for two additional scripts, but it needs to go further than that. When I started watching the show I didn’t fall in love with it right away, but the fact and the matter is, it has gotten better.

Week after week the show managed to improve, and this week was had another episode that was simply brilliant. The show is great, filled with many characters who are actually really fun and adorable, and while it doesn’t seem to be doing all that great rating-wise, make no mistake this is much better than the new 90210 is, or than a new Melrose Place would ever be.

Privileged: All About Defining Yourself

Privileged(S01E08) As last night was all about the election of Barack Obama, a little network went against everyone else and aired its usual lineup. One of the shows to be on the air was no other than Privileged, a show that I most definitely hope will get a back-nine order, because each week it gets better, it’s always a pleasure to watch a new episode and I wouldn’t want to have to let everyone go too early.

Last week I talked about a new Sage, and how after really disliking her character things seemed to have been evolving, as if the character was being taken into a new direction, a much better one. Now of course they can’t just forget about everything that happened before, neither should they, and so of course she still is a bit of the same mean girl she always was.

Privileged: All About Insecurities

Privileged(S01E09) Sometimes when watching a show, you have no idea where this story will take you, what will happen next and where the characters will end up. Other times, you pretty much know exactly what’s going to happen because it always follow an established formula, and as a result it’s easy to guess everything that’s coming next, even the so-called “surprises” or “twists”.

This week on Privileged, it wasn’t really hard to see how everything would play out. Not so much because the show follows a formula and every episode looks the same, but because last week things were put in motion, and it certainly looked like there weren’t a dozen of possibilities after that. Things had to happen, and they had to happen a certain way. And so, this week, they pretty much did…

Privileged: All About Overcompensating

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | November 19, 2008

Privileged(S01E08) Before we get into this episode, let me just remind you that while this episode didn’t do too well in the ratings, The CW have faith that the show has potential to grow, and the next couple of episodes will probably play a big role in the decision making process. We won’t have no new episode next week, but Privileged will then be back for two consecutive weeks on a special Monday airing.

On both December 1st and 8th the show will air Mondays at 9.00 after the popular (thought slightly declining in recent weeks) Gossip Girl. Hopefully this will lead to a boost in ratings, and after ordering five additional episodes the net will finally give the show the full season pick-up it rightfully deserves.
