(S01E01) So last night on Fox, right after Idol so expected some good numbers quite obviously, premiered a new series called New Amsterdam. I’ll be honest, when I first heard about the show I wasn’t really excited about it, not at all in fact, because it’s nothing but yet another cop show with a twist. Or at least, that’s how it sounds : you got this guy, Amsterdam, who’s a detective and solves crimes. Oh but wait, here’s a twist : he’s actually immortal !
Sounds boring enough, just that really doesn’t mean anything. I know this for a fact, because one of my most favorite series ever could but summarized the same, a cop show with a twist. Only let’s be completely fair, Life is so much more than that, you have no idea! One of the best series ever. So while I’m not going to say I expected New Amsterdam to be just about the same, sure as Hell I knew it could turn out to be much more than just another cop show with a twist…

Shows: New Amsterdam
In Series: New Amsterdam Season 1
By fred | March 7, 2008
(S01E02) If it feels like not so long ago since the last episode, it’s because it was indeed only a couple of days ago that the show premiered. As I said then, I wasn’t really impressed by the show. Not bad, but not good either. And some huge HUGE flaws in the script, too. But it was a pilot, and every pilot is a really hard thing to do, it has to expose the idea of the new, it has to introduce the characters that we’ll get to see every week, and while setting all of this up it should also have a story.
It’s not a really easy thing to do, and often pilots are pretty packed with everything, sometimes too much, and may not spend enough time on everything or put the actual story of the week in the background to focus on other things. So hopefully, this episode would be an improvement over the pilot.

Shows: New Amsterdam
In Series: New Amsterdam Season 1
By fred | March 11, 2008
(S01E03) So far I haven’t been impressed by either one of the two episodes of New Amsterdam that already aired, and it’s not really that the show is bad, but - quite much like lead-in Canterbury’s Law - the problem with this show is that, in the end, it’s really nothing we haven’t seen before. Here we have yet another cop drama with a twist, which is that he’s actually immortal.
None of that sounds really new, and Amsterdam isn’t really that much of a great character, he doesn’t really stand out. He claims to be cynical, but really he is not. What defines him is the fact that he’s been around for a few hundreds years, and that as such he’s got an awesome knowledge of everything, since he’s seen it all.

Shows: New Amsterdam
In Series: New Amsterdam Season 1

(S01E04) I know that Canterbury’s Law aired first, but I did watch this show first. Not because I had seen the CBS comedy first, but because I have to admit that while both shows are flawed, this one actually kinda interest me more. It’s something weird, because every episode came with its problems, and I’ve had a few issues with the show and what happened on every single episode, yet I keep coming back to this show.
I do, because despite it all I still like it, for some reason I can’t really explain. Many things aren’t right, but there’s a charm to it that is just hard to resist. Or I imagine it would be, I don’t know, I never tried, cause I actually enjoy the show.

Shows: New Amsterdam
In Series: New Amsterdam Season 1
By fred | March 25, 2008
(S01E05) Last week I wondered whether or not the show had made a clear decision about what it wanted to be about first, a cop solving murder, or an immortal soul seeking its mate. While the cop/investigation was always the prominent part of every episodes, it always seemed to be hesitant as to whether it was first about a cop investigating murders, or a guy looking for his true love.
But despite that and despite its many flaws, I always enjoyed watching each episode and like the show. I have to say, though, that this episode left me in a complete different place, and I am starting not to enjoy it so much…

Shows: New Amsterdam
In Series: New Amsterdam Season 1
By fred | April 1, 2008
(S01E06) Along with the comedies on CBS, there’s one other show I do watch from the Monday night schedule, and that’s New Amsterdam on Fox. I’ve been watching this new series from the start, and from the very beginning of things I’ve had issues with it. It wasn’t ever really great and many things were actually quite bad, but somehow I felt compelled to come back week after week.
So quite obviously, a new week, a new episode, and I was still around. Although I have to say that (since) last week I’ve started to wonder for how long this mysterious force would be enough to get me to come back, if the show never actually improves.

Shows: New Amsterdam
In Series: New Amsterdam Season 1
By fred | April 8, 2008
(S01E07) Ever since this show premiered, I’ve had complaints about it. Because the show is far from being perfect, or even just good actually. Let’s face it, it has had enormous problems when it comes to situations actually making sense, sometimes it was so gigantic it’s hard to believe they really expect us to be okay with it, but somehow that never seemed to be a problem because they didn’t try to fix this, they didn’t even stop adding new stupid plot lines like that.
There’s that, and then of course there’s what I mentioned last week : this show doesn’t seem to know what it is, what it wants to be, or what it should be, actually. Maybe they actually realized they had problems making sense when dealing with John being immortal and his quest for “the one”, the soul that would make him mortal, so they decided to focus more on the whole cop aspect of it, but given how that’s always been the weakest part of the show, what we agreed to go through because it was required but not what made the show or what we actually liked, and why we came back week after week, well, needless to say that wasn’t a smart decision.

Shows: New Amsterdam
In Series: New Amsterdam Season 1
By fred | April 15, 2008
(S01E08) Alright, so we’re here, in what will be the last episode of New Amsterdam for this season, that’s for sure, and also might be the last one for the entire series as well. It is still unclear whether or not Fox will renewed it for a second season, but it hasn’t done really good and I would tend to think the chances are relatively high that you just saw the series finale.
So, did it work ? Was it a good series finale, bringing answers and closure, or was it not ? Did it end with a cliffhanger leaving you waiting for the next season, or not ? And, first and foremost, was it a good episode at all ?

Shows: New Amsterdam
In Series: New Amsterdam Season 1
By fred | April 18, 2008
(S03E17) This season of My Name Is Earl will without a doubt be one very odd season, one that didn’t really obey the rules, one that morphed the show into something else, all of that while also remaining somewhat the same, of course. Because at first, the show was about this guy, who had been a real douche for his entire life, and someday met Karma and decided that he had to change.
So he made this list of all the bad things he’s done in the past, and started a journey with one mission : to make up for each and everyone of those bad things. He had to find everyone he had hurt, one way or another, and make up for it. That was the show, that was what it was and how it worked. But this season, it hasn’t really been the case, not so much.
