(S01E01) So last night was the premiere of HBO new drama, In Treatment. And it’s not a show like any other, starting with the way it airs : you got five half-hour episode a week. Monday to Thursday Paul Weston, the therapist, he has appointment with a different patient, and on Friday he switches roles and becomes the patient as he go see his own therapist.
Okay so before going any further I have to make this little completely unrelated side note, but every time I see that word, therapist, I can’t help myself but remember that Jeopardy bit on SNL, where “Sean Connery” would ask for a question from category “the rapist”. I know it’s silly but that had me laughing so hard, and I’ve obviously been traumatized because now that’s what I always see. Sometimes I actually read it as two words, and it makes me laugh.
Okay sorry, back on the show, and today’s session.

(S01E02) Another day, another session. That’s how it works with HBO’s new series, In Treatment. I’m not sure how it is going to turn out in the end, but after two episodes only I can already see how some could watch only parts of the show, not all episodes, but only those they are interested in.
And because of its unusual “format”, it’s not hard to figure out which one you may be interested in, and which on you may drop. The show will obviously work on a “serialized” format, but with four different stories, one per patient. And not only are those stories completely unrelated to one another, but you know in advance which episode will focus on which story, and that there will never be one episode with more than one story. Except for Friday, of course, when Dr Paul Weston goes to see his own therapist. So it should be easy to pick your days.
Last night was Tuesday, and Tuesday is the day when Alex comes in.

(S01E03) It’s a daily show, so with a new day came a new episode, and a new patient for Paul Weston, therapist of In Treatment. As I’ve said yesterday, I think than this show might probably not be watched “fully”, but that people will chose their day and patients of choice. You have to give it to them, so, with each episode came a new character, and they’re all different.
This week we met with Sophie, and she was nothing like Alex or Laura, which were both nothing alike already. So at least there’s that. But because they are indeed different, and because each episode that will be about them will entirely depend on them, their story, and whether or not we actually care for it, it’ll be easy for people to decide that some patient isn’t worth their time and they don’t bother with the show on that day.

(S01E04) Here we go again, with another day came another patient for Paul, HBO’s very own therapist. The concept of the show is as much in the way its done than it is in its schedule. I said before that I could see how people could chose a few patients they liked, and only watch episodes with them. It works, because none of the stories are related - which is good - and I think that if it may bee surprising to have one new episode every day, it couldn’t have worked otherwise, you’d forget about each story or character and by the time they’d be back for another session you wouldn’t care anymore.
The only real question comes from the Friday show, which will be different and may be the exception where all stories are crossing paths, since this time Paul gets to be the patient. But for now, he’s still the therapist.

(S01E05) So after a full week of various patients for Paul, a different one each day the whole week, Friday was time to switch side. To end the week, on Friday Paul goes to see his own therapist and talk about his patients. So far each episode had been about a different patient and had its own and independent story, none of them related to the others and you could easily pick the days, patients and stories you were interested in, while dropping the others.
But the Friday’s appointment is unlike any other, because Paul goes in and becomes the patient, talks about his week and the way his patients affected him and his work. At least that’s what I was told, that’s what I thought it it’d be like. But it wasn’t.

(S01E06) For a second week now Paul is back with all its patient, one a day, as usual. And so just like last week, we open on Monday with Laura. I watched this one again, just to see how it would go, but I have to admit that Laura’s episode was probably one of the weakest of last week. The only episode I liked less would be the Friday session which was the most disappointing of all.
But Laura isn’t that much better : she’s the girl in love with her therapist. Although as hinted last Friday, there might be more to it…

(S01E07) As always, with each day now comes a new episode of HBO’s latest series. And as this second week goes by, you really realize that the show is constructed as four or five different shows, one for each day of the week, one with its own patient and the story that comes along. And with this second week, I might start to cancel a few appointments, on days I don’t find the story or patient to be worth it.
Tuesday is the day where Alex, dead-man walking, shows up. I liked his session last week, so I was happy to see him come back, though unlike Paul I knew he would.

(S01E08) So I’m apparently going to stick around for another full week of In Treatment, and as the week goes I find myself amused to see how things are evolving. Is it the stories or characters, is it the episodes that are uneven, or is it just me, I’m not sure, but for the first two episodes of this week, things were reserved, like this was Bizarro-week or something.
Not in what actually happened or the characters themselves, it was still a continuity of their previous sessions, but I was now interested in the ones I hated at first, while bored with those I found interesting the first week. And last week, I didn’t care for Sophie, so I guess this might be a good episode this week…

(S01E09) Okay, so I’ve been a little busy and despite the (soon to be over) strike, Thursday is still a big night. So yes, I failed to watch the two last episodes of In Treatment, plus I have to say I wasn’t that excited about it… I watch the show, I kinda like it, but I can do without it quite fine.
But I’m watching the episodes I missed and I just watched the first one, Thursday’s session and the return of Jake and Amy, the couple that I said last week had to get a divorce, since they obviously couldn’t stand each others or talk to one another without screaming and yelling. Of course, this episode was very different. Well, it was and it wasn’t.

(S01E10) And here we go, I’ve watched Thursday’s session and so I’m jumping in on Friday’s sessions right after. I wasn’t a fan of last week’s session, and I’m not sure I will like it either if this time all they talk about is what happened on Thursday.
To me, this one was supposed to be about all the patients at once and how they affect Paul. If it turns out to be simply about him, I’m not saying it cannot be interesting, but sure as Hell it doesn’t have that special thing that it was supposed to have, and it becomes just another session, pretty much. And as a patient, I don’t think I care about Paul and his marital trouble.
