(S01E01) This is where things start, the first installment of NBC anthology series that is all about making us scream… Well, at least that’s what they hope, and what I hope(d) as well, to be honest. I don’t really expect to scream, but I sure hope that given the names behind the project this will eventually turn out to be, as it’s been described, a “fun-filled ride of terror”.
And this is how I went into the first episode, all ready and willing to like it and enjoy the ride into horror. And I went into horror territory alright, but unfortunately it wasn’t really the way I expected it, nor was it the way we were supposed to. In other words, this wasn’t the best of starts for Fear Itself, but at least all episodes will come from different writers and involve completely different stories and characters, so there’s hope things will improve in the coming weeks…

(S01E02) I’m not sure why, but usually anthologies don’t do so well in ratings. Which is kinda odd, because at least it’s not serialized even one bit, so you cannot say you fear of investing into a show only to see it being canceled before you get any answers. Here, every episode stands on its own and has nothing to do with the others, really.
Of course, it also means you never know what to expect from such series : just because one episode was terrible, or on the contrary absolutely brilliant, doesn’t mean the next one(s) will be the same. But that’s part of the fun, tuning in each week to venture into a total mystery, in about every possible ways there is. Last week for its series premiere, we had a pretty weak episode, which seems like another stupid decision from NBC (along with putting this show on their schedule exactly on the same day & time the other new series of the summer is on), because clearly starting with a strong episode would have helped things.
I sure hope people won’t have been discouraged or turned down by last week’s episode, because it seems things are going better.

(S01E03) Well well… we are now in for the third installment of NBC’s anthology Fear Itself, and if there’s one that (pretty much) always goes with anthologies - that you can’t really know what to expect from week to week, even from a quality POV - at least after three episodes we can start to see a pattern as to how each of the stories will be constructed.
No, not all are the same and there are no template they are all bounded to, but it’s become clear now that at least a few things can be seen about each story, a few things that are likely to be how each installment of the anthology will be constructed, and unfortunately it’s not really all for the best.

Shows: Fear Itself
In Series: Fear Itself Season 1

(S01E04) So last night we had another installment of the NBC anthology Fear Itself, and as said per the rules of the genre, one can never really judge or make expectations for an episode based on the quality, or lack of it, of past episodes. Because every episode exists on its own, without any link to the others. Their stories aren’t linked, they don’t share the same actors, writers or directors, and as a result you can go from one extreme to the other week after week, you can never know.
The first you’ll notice about this episode, is probably that it stars two known faces from USA comedy Psych, James Roday and Maggie Lawson. But this episode was written by Victor Salva, writer of Jeepers Creepers and its sequel. And in the end, I think he’s mostly the one to blame for this crappy episode.

Shows: Fear Itself
In Series: Fear Itself Season 1

(S01E05) Alright, so with a new Thursday came a new installment of NBC horror anthology Fear Itself, and needless to say I didn’t had any high hopes for this episode. So far I don’t think we had one episode that was actually good, and the only times I did enjoy the show, cause it did happen, was because of great acting performances, and only because of that.
This was initially presented as a potentially great thing, cause it had all those famous names when it came to writing and directing, names of people who knew the genre and could, hopefully, deliver some goods. Sadly though, this is exactly where the show has been lacking all along, going for the most common stories, clichéd everything, and always trying to get that last-minute twist that rendered the whole thing even more stupid and less credible.
So, yeah, kinda hard to get excited about a new episode now…

(S01E06) Last week there was none, and now we have a new episode of NBC anthology, Fear Itself. And that might just be the best thing about this this : it is an anthology, and as such you’re allowed to keep thinking and hoping that just because the last episode sucked, this one might just be completely different, in every possible way, and turn out to be one of the greatest thing you’ve seen in years, in this past week.
I’m pretty sure that’s how I approach it, before I started watching I was hoping that despite everything that happened so far, and how each episode has been a disappointment, this one would be different, this one would finally be good, enjoyable, that the curse would stop there. Sadly though, as one could have suspected, that wasn’t the case. But!

(S01E07) So last week, while the episode was all the more predictable, and didn’t always make sense, and as such could have end up being pretty boring, as I said then I ended up liking it. I’m not sure why, but something worked and I enjoyed the episode despite knowing what was going to happen all the time and never be any surprise, or scared.
This week it was all the same in that we knew what was going on, what was going to happen, and how things would end. We knew it all, again no surprises along the way, yet there was a big difference with last week’s episode : I was incredibly bored.
And really, when you look at this episode, how could you not be ?

Shows: Fear Itself
In Series: Fear Itself Season 1

(S01E08) As I said last night, when I heard that Fear Itself was classified as a show “on the bubble”, as in it’s renewal for a second season is far from being a given, I was shocked. Not because I thought there would be a second season, but because it seemed obvious to me there wouldn’t be one. Two reasons : first, the show has pretty much sucked from day one and all episodes have been a disappointment; and second, the numbers haven’t been all that good, pretty much loosing viewers week after week.
And this is also why I approached this episode differently, because this time I knew it wouldn’t be good, I didn’t expect anything, I didn’t even hope that this might be, finally, the episode that makes it all worthwhile - or at least, you know, a good episode. I had no expectations, which is the only reason I wasn’t disappointed this time, because other than that it sucked…
