Eli Stone: The Path [season premiere]

Eli Stone(S02E01) Last season, I started watching Eli Stone and did not like it, so much that I came this close to giving up on the show. But being the TVoholic that I am I still watched a few more episodes, and then something amazing happened : it got better. Week after week the show was improving, each episode making you love the show a little more. And so, as many of you I imagine, by the end of the first season I was expecting an Earth quake long before it happened, yes, I was a believer, I believed in Eli Stone.

And the one thing that I would say was the more characteristic about the show during its first season, it wasn’t the legal business, it wasn’t his dealing with faith either, and it wasn’t even the musical numbers we got regularly. No, what I really think made this show so special was his constant evolution. Not just because it was getting better, but because it was never settling into being just a procedural with the vision of the week, the main plot was constantly evolving, as were the characters.

Eli Stone: Grace

Eli Stone(S02E02) After a pretty darn good premiere things are slowly getting back to normal for Eli Stone, now that he has his aneurysm back. But as I was saying last week, one of the things that I enjoy the most about this show is that there is a constant evolution, and you never know where or how far things will go. In all other shows, when the big boss start acting like he might have gone insane, you know he has not and it won’t go anywhere — unless this is the last season before the actor leaves the show.

But here, things are different, because this is Eli Stone. So when Jordan is starting to come up with new ideas and plans of radical changes for the company, as he let Eli know by the end of last week’s episode, it could actually go both ways : he’s crazy and will lose the company, or he’s crazy but very good, smart and lucky enough to get his way. Well, maybe there are other ways, which don’t have him be crazy, I don’t know…

Eli Stone: Unwritten

Eli Stone(S02E03) Eli Stone was cured, last season. He got ride of his aneurysm and of the visions that come with it (or so he thought). But after realizing what it would mean for him to be free of it, namely that it would be passed on to his brother Nate, Eli decided that this was his calling after all, he took it back, accepted the job and so the show could have a second season.

Awesome, but not that simple. Lots of things have been going on since the season began, many changes not only for Eli, bur for everyone else, starting with Jordan. Jordan has a new vision his company (or an old one…), one more like what Eli has been fighting for recently, one that his associates didn’t really agreed with. And so, continuing with the show’s tradition of constant changes and evolution, this all had to be settled.

Eli Stone: Should I Stay Or Should I Go?

Eli Stone(S02E04) And here I was, thinking we might here The Clash during this episode… Anyways. If there is one thing I’ve always praised when it comes to this show, it is change. Changes are usually not a common thing on TV, you don’t often see any real change in the life of a show, but on Eli Stone changes are pretty much the rules. Everything is always changing and evolving, and not always the way you think it would.

Of course the major changes going on at the moment, are the separation of Jordan and his former partners, and the new firm he is now creating, with Eli as a full partner; Seems that Eli will be his successor after all. And as we all expected, during the split every employee is being pursued by Posner, not only because they/some are great lawyers, but also to hurt Jordan.

Eli Stone: The Humanitarian

Eli Stone(S02E05) Things have been pretty unusual for Eli and the rest of the people who didn’t fall on to the dark side, with the split of companies and all. So far this season, Eli didn’t really get a chance to work a “real” case and do so with the little help from above, since they clearly leave no doubt now that, at the very least in Eli’s mind, his visions are a direct message from God.

Eli has been having visions and he’s been in court, even though he was not always allowed to, but it was to help Jordan and ensure their new company would have a future. Now that this is done and everyone picked a side, we can slowly move into a new daily routine. Except that, here, it’s never that easy, and you don’t ever get such a thing.

Eli Stone: Happy Birthday Nate

Eli Stone(S02E06) Things changed since the last time we saw Eli. Not on the show itself, as this episode was a continuation of the last one, but outside in our “real” world. We already knew the show was in trouble, not performing too well in ratings, and it wasn’t easy to get another season, or even a full season pick up. Now, while the word might not have been used officially, the fate of the show is pretty much set.

13 episodes were ordered and has been produced, and hopefully ABC will air all of them, but there won’t be any more after that. Which also means that writers didn’t know at the time that things would go down that way, and we might never really get any conclusion. It’s never good, but it’ll be even worse here because Eli had his job, you know being a lawyer and all, but he also has his calling.

Eli Stone: Help

Eli Stone(S02E07) Remember how in the past I’ve praised this show for its constant evolution - and improvement - episodes after episodes ? It’s always been something very special on this show, things never really stayed the same, in more than one way. But lately I’m starting to wonder if this might not actually be the cause of his demise, and where the show is stating to lose itself.

Because if it’s one thing to always have things in motion, and never simply redo the same old formula applied to each and every episodes, it’s also something else completely to take what the show once was, and turn it into something entirely different. Now, I’m not saying this is what happened here on Eli Stone, but it does feel like we’re heading that way.

Eli Stone: Owner Of A Lonely Heart

Eli Stone(S02E08) I remember how last time, I was worried about what was going on with this show, how its constant evolution might had it lost itself and forget what was, it used to be or was supposed to be. It felt like the show did resemble what it originally was, to the point where I wasn’t sure whether or not this was still really Eli Stone, the show that I loved.

So I’m happy to say that this week felt a little bit more “normal” than last episode. It’s still quite different that what it used to be last season, in the way Eli deals with everything that happens to him, and there’s still a focus more on the personal aspect of everyone’s life that there used to be, but I guess I just really liked this episode.

Eli Stone: Two Ministers

Eli Stone(S02E09) Well, this was obviously the last episode of 2008 for Eli Stone, and it might also be the last one in a while/altogether, since while more episodes have been produced, ABC has yet to announce any dates for the remaining episodes. Hopefully they will air those episodes, but for now we don’t know when, or even if, they will do so. I sure hope they will, though.

As for this episode, it’s definitely not the one you want to end the show with. A few reasons fore that, the main one being that this can’t be how Eli is last remembered by its fans, we cannot have as memory of the last time we saw him what we got to see during this episode. Because of what happened and the way things “ended” of course, but also because I don’t think this was a very good episode!
