(S01E01) There were two new series opposing each other last night on TV, the two of them being based on UK series. The first one is Eleventh Hour (CBS), and he second one Life On Mars (ABC). I was curious about both though excited about none, and so when it came down to deciding which one to watch first I just went by alphabetical order : Eleventh Hour was first on my list so it was easier that way, and here we go.
So here we go, with the made-for-CBS Jerry Bruckheimer-produced version of Fringe, as the show has been described. Like on Fox new series, this is a show about science, and we have this special scientist, or doctor, who’s been asked to investigate such out of the ordinary cases because his expertise is required to understand it all and break the cases. Note that unlike Fringe though, it seems to be actual science, not science-fiction (or fringe science).

Shows: Eleventh Hour

(S01E02) The pilot didn’t really impressed me, far from it actually, but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t come back. Not just cause I’m a TVoholic but also because one episode really isn’t enough to judge a show. So here I was, ready for more. That being said, I still remembered the pilot episode and I knew what I was getting into, read I wasn’t expecting anything great, or even really good to be honest.
During the pilot, many things didn’t work for me, many of which I also assumed were only there because it was, a pilot. So there was a need to introduce all characters and their relationship, there was a need to do many things even if they felt forced at times, just because it’s a pilot and there’s a tendency to overdo things and pack too much during such episode.

Shows: Eleventh Hour
In Series: Eleventh Hour Season 1
By fred | October 24, 2008
(S01E03) This show focuses on Hood, obviously. He is the main character, and also the raison d’ĂȘtre of this show, without him there’s nothing left. Sure, he isn’t the only regular character, but Rachel Young is only his handler, as she says, or just a bodyguard, or a highly-paid driver, take your pick. But it’s not like with House, where of course the cranky doctor is the reason for the show to exists, and why all patients want to be treated there, because he’s House, that genius doctor, because while that is true, he isn’t alone.
House has a team of smart, gifted doctors that do help him in his daily life, a team that could manage to survive without him. Here, Hood is everything, and he is alone. He’s got no team, no (best) friend, no sidekick, and again, Young is more like a driver than she is really helping. But if Hood is everything, the problem is that we don’t really know much about him, and he doesn’t even seem all that special.

Shows: Eleventh Hour
In Series: Eleventh Hour Season 1
By fred | October 31, 2008
(S01E04) I recently talked about why Eleventh Hour was more exciting than Life On Mars, and as I explained, even though I’ll be the first to admit that there’s a higher quality level on ABC drama, this show is simply more exciting due to the way it’s been constructed, and that’s why I did tune in to watch it first.
Because when this episode opened, I had no idea what this would be about, it could go in any direction, and that makes thing quite exciting. Unfortunately though, it does seem as if Eleventh Hour really wants to remain Jerry Bruckheimer’s least interesting procedural, and if they don’t even try to get better at it and improve the quality of the show, I don’t see myself watching for too long.

Shows: Eleventh Hour
In Series: Eleventh Hour Season 1
By fred | November 7, 2008
(S01E05) Not so long ago I argued that Eleventh Hour was more exciting than Life On Mars, because of the way the show was constructed and the fact that it is incredibly more open to anything, that each episode could look like no other and go into any direction, that there are all sorts of possibilities at our doorstep, unlike with ABC drama with it’s the usual crime of the week of your typical procedural cop-drama - only in 1973.
But as I said then, this show also has a much lower quality level, mostly in the writing, and that is a real problem. The show might be more exiting and with a lot more potential, if none of it is put to good use but wasted on poor writing, it won’t go anywhere and people will eventually go away, to ABC, another network, or away from TV God forbid.

Shows: Eleventh Hour
In Series: Eleventh Hour Season 1
By fred | November 14, 2008
(S01E06) Last week I was saying how, despite coming with a potentially exciting and wide open concept, the show had so far failed to deliver even a single episode that really felt strong, and could leave us hopeful that in the future this show could turn into something pretty good. Which is why I was rather happy while watching this episode, as finally we got one !
One pretty good episode that, while certainly not perfect, felt quite stronger and better than the ones before it. I think that this was the best episode so far, and a sign that there might be hope for the show to really find its tone and get better week after week, which could result in something rather interesting.

Shows: Eleventh Hour
In Series: Eleventh Hour Season 1
By fred | November 21, 2008
(S01E07) This episode was the perfect follow-up to last week’s in that it continues the latest trend in this show : getting better. From the start I’ve been feeling like this show had potential to be pretty good, but failed to really deliver on its promise. Something that is actually also quite true about this episode, whose premise I thought was pretty interesting, though not very new.
Alas as the episode went by, I couldn’t help but feel as if it’s not so much that the episode was bad, it is that it could (should) have been better. What’s worse is that the flaws came from Hood more than from anyone else, meaning they’re not going anywhere and need to be addressed. On the other hand, there were many signs of improvement that show we might be on the right path…

Shows: Eleventh Hour
In Series: Eleventh Hour Season 1
By fred | December 5, 2008
(S01E08) I don’t think this show is one of the best thing on TV right now, but it is good and, more importantly, it keeps getting better. It isn’t a major hit, but it’s doing more than fine - averaging 12 million viewers, making it the second-best new series of the season, no less. Which is why CBS did the only thing they could and ordered more episodes, and why I keep watching.
With this episode, I’m not exactly sure how I feel. Here’s the thing : at first I thought it looked really good. In fact, I was impressed because it felt like the show had become much stronger than it used to be at first, and I was under the impression I might be watching nothing less than the best episode of the series so far. Unfortunately, along the way came a few things that I didn’t really liked.

Shows: Eleventh Hour
In Series: Eleventh Hour Season 1
By fred | December 12, 2008
(S01E09) The year is ending, Christmas is around the corner, so for the last episode of 2008 it’s only normal that Hood and Young got to have their latest case in Daytona for Spring Break. Not a lot of snow, but - in their own sick way - a lot of cold. One thing this show has been doing ever since it premiered is to improve, it’s gotten better.
In fact, it’s gotten much better, and even though this episode was far from perfect, it was a pretty good hour of entertainment and, I think, probably the strongest episode of the show yet. This can only mean we’re on some even better things next year, and I can’t wait to find out what creepy weird scientific case they have in store for 2009 — but for now, Spring Break.
