Criminal Minds: Mayhem [season premiere]

Criminal Minds(S04E01) Time to get back right in the middle of, well, Mayhem. When we left Hotch and the others they were in the middle of what looks like a very well thought-out act of terrorism, one that was coming up very soon. Their plan was already in motion, and last season ended with an explosion, one of the SUV exploded and we didn’t know whose car it was, or if anyone was going to be hurt, or killed.

Af first it looked as if could have been about anyone, also by that time it was already possible to eliminate a few possibilities. Emily, Reid, Garcia, JJ or Morgan were safe, at least that how I felt because it didn’t match with the explosion. I thought there were only two actual possibilities : Rossi, and Hotch.

Criminal Minds: The Angel Maker

Criminal Minds(S04E02) When this season opened, there were a lot of things that needed to be addressed, as we had been left hanging on a pretty big cliffhanger, the explosion of an SUV. Of course this needed to be addressed, and the rest of the ongoing case with it had to come to an end as well. And that’s exactly what they did, they caught the bad guy and put an end to the case.

But the thing is, there wasn’t much profiling going on. Lots of things happened, there was action and chases all over the place, but it didn’t really feel that much like an episode of the show, because usually here they are the brains of the investigation, they analyzes everything, they get into the mind of the unsub and make a profile that will eventually lead to his arrest. All that part had pretty much been done last season, and it was missed.

This week, for our great pleasure, it was all back!

Criminal Minds: Minimal Loss

Criminal Minds(S04E03) So far, this season looks nothing like the previous one. Last year there’s been lots of things coming in the way and making it harder for the show to have a regular season. It started with an unexpected departure, and then of course there was the strike. As a result, I think this was the most uneven season ever, with at times episodes that I thought were really weak, bad even, and at other times simply some of the best episodes of the series.

Now that the new team is in place and there’s no strike of any kind coming up (right??), the show is fully back on track. And while I thought the season premiere was maybe a little disappointing, every episode after that simply got better than the previous one, and this week I think we had, once again, one of the best episodes the show ever produced.

Criminal Minds: Paradise

Criminal Minds(S04E04) Once upon a time there was another team leader for the Behavioral Analysis Unit, once upon a time the addition of Rosi wasn’t all that smooth, but one thing for sure this season is that all that is in the past. Now the team might have changed, just like it had before, but there’s simply no question about it : they are all part of the team, all fully integrated and caring for each other.

Maybe it’s because they all were involved in some traumatic events, but either way and as illustrated again this week, the show is better than ever. This season had been very consistent at delivering one great episode after the other, and if it continues to do so we’re definitely in for the best season of Criminal Minds to date.

In other words, this was a terrific episode.

Criminal Minds: Catching Out

Criminal Minds(S04E05) I might be wrong on this one, but it’s the feeling I got watching this episode : this season more than ever, Criminal Minds shows that each case is processed by an entire team. Obviously this has been the case from day one, that the concept of the show : a team of profilers who come to assist the local authorities, a team who will together help catching the bag guys.

But while there’s always been team work from the beginning, and while there can always be an episode where someone will be more involved or more active in a case than the rest of the team will be, I just have this impression that, this season - and ever since Gideon left - it is even more a team effort, where everyone is equally involved.

Criminal Minds: The Instincts

Criminal Minds(S04E06) I guess everyone has their favorites, you probably have your own one or two characters on this show, or any other show you watch, that you simply like more than the others. Doesn’t mean the others aren’t any or loved, just that this one person is closer to your heart, or that you tend to find that when he or she is more involved, episode get better — or you enjoy them more.

For instance, on Criminal Minds I’ve always really liked Reid, and I always thought that the more he is involved the better the episode is. Reid isn’t really a profiler, and he’s not really an FBI agent, he’s not really anything you can sum up to a traditional label. Reid is a genius mind that doesn’t work like any other, sometimes it’s almost as if he wasn’t human, even though, as Prentiss recently noted, “he’s so life-like“.

Criminal Minds: Memoriam

Criminal Minds(S04E07) As expected this was a direct continuation of last week’s event, when while investigating a new case Reid started to have vivid nightmares, and recollection of another little boy who was murdered in Vegas, a kid about his age that he probably knew, and of whom he saw - in his dream - the killer. The killer who was no other than William Reid, father of the genius BAU member.

I was pretty curious to see how this would all go down, with one thing in mind I knew I did not want to see happening, because I felt it would just be way too much and make things completely unbelievable : it couldn’t be true, that Reid’s father was actually a pedophile and a murderer. One crazy mother is enough drama for the family, and any more would have been too much.

Criminal Minds: Masterpiece

Criminal Minds(S04E08) We all know Reid is special, he is not like the rest of us, he is a little genius living in his own world. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, it really isn’t. It has served him well over the years, and surely did too for the show. But there’s no question that his mind is of superior intelligence, he does think like every body else, and that’s why he can think of things and see things where we can’t.

That’s why he’s so good at playing chess, because he’s able to see what his opponent will do before he even knows it, because he can always be a couple of moves (if not more) ahead of everyone. That’s the thing with brilliant minds, whether they’re good or evil.

Criminal Minds: 52 Pickup

Criminal Minds(S04E09) Last week the episode looked like it was going to be great, but alas turned out to be quite disappointing as the cliché ending kind of ruined it all, but we won’t let this little misstep break an otherwise pretty awesome season the show has been delivering so far. Last week JJ was already missing, but we didn’t get to see agent Todd pick a case and present it to the team.

Instead, that crazy George came to Reid and initiated their little game. So this week we finally got to see his first pick, how she would present the case to everyone and how it would work. It was important not because she’s the latest addition to the team, even if that’s only temporary, but also because so far I haven’t liked very much the way she’s been introduced, which seemed to go through all possible clichéd ways it could.

Criminal Minds: Brothers In Arms

Criminal Minds(S04E10) Every time it’s the same, there’s a new case the whole team is called to work on. But after a few times where the episodes took a more character-centric tone, as we saw some Reid-centric episodes where he had to deal with some old nightmares of his and also maybe initiated a new romantic relationship, or how Rosi took things personally when a serial killer came after him, this week was more of a team effort.

This week, while there was still obviously one of the team for whom things hit closer to home than for others, everything went down quite more low-key than in the past, and in fact what got noticed wasn’t how someone was put up front, but how someone else was put in the back a little for the occasion.
