Californication: Pilot

Californication(S01E01) Californication marks the return of David Duchovny on TV, and if there’s something for sure it’s that watching the show you won’t see Fox Mulder any more. The show might not sound very interesting on paper, the life of a messed up, one-hit writer whose book was turned into a crappy movie, living a destructive life filled with drinking, drugs, foul language, and sex, lots of sex.
Of course he has a daughter, with an ex he’s still in love with, but it’s a bit too late for that.

No, none of this sound good. But don’t let that fool you, the show turned out to be pretty good in the end!

Californication: Hell-A-Woman

(S01E02) Another episode of this show, and basically it went the same way as its pilot, in both how the stories and characters evolved, or not, and the feeling you get as you watch the show, and the impression it left on you once it’s over.

Californication

But first off, let’s start with the opening credits. They weren’t good. I’m not saying they were bad, but they didn’t really capture the atmosphere of the show. Maybe it’ll grow on me with time, but the music wasn’t anything special and did not reflect either the tone or the flow of the show I thought, but it was ok. The pictures on the other hand weren’t on target either, it was closer to what you read on paper before watching it, than what you actually get on screen in the end.

While on the show Duchovny is great, light, funny, and portrays Hank perfectly, feels very natural and honest to himself ; on the credits it felt awfully forced and, on occasion, fake. Which really sucks, because on the show it’s quite the opposite, and that’s the reason the show is worth watching!

Californication: The Whore of Babylon

Californication(S01E03) Well, now that the excitement for that show is starting to fade away, and the show finding its “marks” and getting into his final shape… it’s not so so great anymore. The problem I think is that the show might think it’s better than it really is, they have a (way) too high value of their own doings.

As I’ve said before, I never felt the show was that good as a concept, it wasn’t neither new or very exciting, but no one cared because the show’s appeal was into witnessing Hank go through his messed-up life, laughing along the way.

Unfortunately, as soon as they start repeating too much themselves, or stop being that funny, there’s nothing left. And that’s already what’s going on, that soon.

Give me my half-hours back!!

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | October 22, 2007

So I’ve been watching a few half-hour series this week-end. Nothing new, just part of my effort to clean my DVR. And I find myself quite disappointed by pretty much all the shows I’ve watched.

Aliens in AmericaFirst it was Aliens in America, the latest sitcom from The CW. I was pretty optimistic about this one after the pilot, because despite a few flaws like any new series, I thought it had some potential. But the voice over thing never went away, and I’m not such a fan, but the humor based on Raja being a Muslim isn’t as provocative or funny as it used to be, but some situations are just plain dumb, and highly predictable, but the role of the father it still very odd, ever since the first pilot (before the recasting) I felt like this character was not fitting in, he wasn’t like a member of the family, and the situations or jokes associated to him were not funny, and not even in the tone of the show.

Nothing of that changed, and I simply don’t enjoy watching it at all. Although there was one pretty good/funny line, from Raja himself : “I have never lied before, and I lost all sense of scale, and then I kept on going and going, in the vain hope that I would stumble upon that one lie, that would make sense of all the others - but I never did.

Quick Review: The Big Bang Theory, Californication

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | October 31, 2007

bigbang01.jpgA couple more shows I got to watch. I know they aired on Monday, but I don’t get to see the that soon, and only managed to do so today. There is a good one, and a bad one. We’ll start with the good one.

The Big Bang Theory

So, maybe you know this one, maybe you don’t. I would totally get it if you never bother to watch it : this show is about two geeks theoretical physicists meeting their new neighbor, who happens to be a girl. We actually follow those two and a bunch of their friends, all geeks, in their daily life trying to behave like, you know, regular people.

Which isn’t that easy for them, because, well , they’re geeks. But the real kind, they look and sound like geeks, they argue over Superman’s plot and for Halloween they dress up as the Doppler effect. And really, it’s funny. It really is.
