30 Rock: Do-Over [season premiere]

30 Rock(S03E01) Finally, it’s back!! We sure had to wait and wait and wait to get this show back on the air, even if Tina Fey was everywhere being praised for her hilarious performances as Sarah Palin. But finally, 30 Rock is back and so the world is better. I often say how wrong the Emmy are and how sometimes you have to wonder if whoever votes even bother to actually watch TV, but when it comes down to this show they definitely got it right.

This show is without a doubt unlike anything else on TV, it is filled with a unique pep energy that is really unique and makes everything seem like it’s all happening at once, one single flow of comedy that ends just after it started, or so it feels. You don’t know why it’s ending already when it just started a few minutes ago, until you realize it was actually half an hour ago and, thinking back, a lot did happen.

30 Rock: Believe In The Stars

30 Rock(S03E02) After its triumphant return last week, 30 Rock is now fully back and, for the time being, will present us with one guest star a week. The show has already proven in the past how great it can be at using special guests and make the most if it, some of those episodes remain among my favorite ones, like Greenzo. That said, I am just a little afraid that the show focus too much on whatever guest of the week is on and not enough on the regular characters of the show.

And once a week for weeks in a row, might have a risk of overdose. Of course, it done brilliantly and without ever leaving one under the impression that changes had to be done to the usual structure and dynamic of the show, if everything continues to be true to the show, it could be a success. Let’s see how things went with this week’s guest, Princess Leia Oprah.

30 Rock: The One With The Cast Of Night Court

30 Rock(S03E03) One thing I’ve always loved about this show, is how they put the show within the show and all its characters on the real network that is NBC, and they’re not afraid to make fun of it. It’s easy to laugh at NBC of course, but they do it very well and it works all the better because Jack is really working for NBC (or GE) or not some fake network, like NCB, MBC or something.

It really just makes everything a lot funnier, and it’s always a lot of fun to see them go there. Of course, it also works a lot better when you do know what they’re talking about, so you can get the references and laughs at all the (private) jokes they throw at you. For instance, believe it or not I have never heard of Night Court (no really) so that’s probably why I didn’t react to this episode as others will have.

30 Rock: Gavin Volure

30 Rock(S03E04) As as become the rule with 30 Rock this season, every week is a new episode, and every episode guest stars some famous celebrity. I have always said that 30 Rock was probably (one of) the best shows when it came down to using guests and making the most of it, using them as integral part of the show, not something that felt forced or out of place.

Still, I’ve had my worries about this constant use of guests this season, and quite frankly during last week’s episode with Jennifer Aniston’s appearance, I could see why. This week was Steve Martin’s turn, and I am happy to say he was probably one of the best guests we got to see this season so far. A terrific performance and lots of great lines to throw at us all the time, great stuff.

30 Rock: Reunion

30 Rock(S03E05) Finally. Finally, this week we had something I have been waiting for ever since this season premiered, and that is a new episode of 30 Rock that would not feature a bug celebrity as guest star, and make the episode all about it. I know that this was surely good for publicity and helped the show, and writers of the show have always done a great job when it comes to it, but I was getting tired of it.

I wanted the the to go back to its original self, existing on its own, and leaving the guest-stars to be something special that happens on occasion, but not a rule. So I was really pleased with the lack of celebrity this week, but apparently writers might have been a little on withdrawal effects, they missed it, they had gotten used to it, and so they were still on that mode.

30 Rock: Christmas Special

30 Rock(S03E06) I have to say, I got worried for a moment here when this episode started. Last week was a good episode, but it was also still one away from the studio, the TGS show and as a result, the writing room and all those characters we have seen so little of this season. And this week, for a moment there I thought this episode was heading the same way, that plotlines would again draw some people away from 30 rock.

Thank God it didn’t last though, and soon everyone was back at work and we had an episode that looked like what they all used to look like back in the days, but that none of the episodes this season ever did, an episode set mostly at NBC, and actually involving some of the behind-the-scenes of the show within the show. I’ve missed that about ever since the season premiered, so I was really happy if only for that.
