Wednesday’s Numbers

Well, there’s no mystery about last night : it was the big season finale of American Idol, a two-hour monster hit, and many caved in without a fight. NBC had two hours of Law & Order reruns, ABC had two hours of Lost reruns, and The CW had two hours of Farmer Want A Wife reruns. They didn’t even try, so why care. CBS on the other hand had something, especially a season finale of their own at 9.00 (Criminal Minds)…
You’ve probably been hearing everywhere that Idol was not performing as good as it used to, that it was on the way down, and while it is true, it does not do as well as it used to, if it keeps going down the way it does now, I think it’s fair to say Fox have some pretty good years ahead of them. I mean it lost only 100 000 viewers over last year, and with 30.6 million viewers overnight, I’m sure at Fox they’re all laughing at those calling it the beginning of the end…
At 8.00 Idol already had 27.0 million viewers, while the second program of the slot was CBS and The Price Is Right, with 7.7 million viewers. Yep.
When things got serious, at 9.00, Idol was unbeatable with 34.2 million viewers and a 12.5 on the demo. Still, on CBS the great season finale of Criminal Minds was holding on pretty damn strong, with 13.0 million viewers on its own. Now that is an improvement by 300 000 viewers over last week, and given how Idol had 10 million more viewers in the same time I guess it’s fair to call that quite impressive !
At 10.00 Fox was out, so other season finale would come in. CSI: New-York on CBS won the slot with 11.7 million viewers (about as much as last week), while Law & Order had 8.5 million viewers for its last episode, and Boston Legal only 6.4 million. It’s not good for Boston Legal, because while the two other shows performed about the same as last week, ABC’s drama lost 1.3 million fans…
