Wednesday’s Numbers [12.10.2008]
By fred | December 11, 2008
Unlike last week CBS had its usual lineup this time, and it showed : 12.03 million viewers overnight, where the second net, NBC, couldn’t even get half of that (5.98 million). The Eye was also winner on the demo with a 3.2, while no one other net could even reach 2.0 but Fox (2.1) The key of success ? Criminal Minds!
Before that the comedies did well, very well in fact : New Adventures Of Old Christine had a season high with 8.25 million viewers (2.2 on the demo) while lead-out Gary Unmarried had one of its best performances with 8.03 million viewers and a 2.4 on the demo. Sadly on ABC it’s not the very little bump that will change anything, with only 4.96 million viewers (1.6 on the demo) for Pushing Daisies.
At 9.00 came the most-watched program of the night, Criminal Minds, with 14.71 million viewers and a 3.9 on the demo, up 700 000 viewers since last episode two weeks ago. Elsewhere a much stronger competition had everything go down since last week, Private Practice with 6.59 million viewers and 2.4 on the demo, which is still an improvement over two weeks ago (+400 000) while Life was down to 5.46 million viewers and 1.8 on the demo.
Sadly, I don’t see Life getting a third season. With the 10.00 slot given away to Leno, NBC won’t have many hours to fill, and chances are next year the show will struggle even more after another long break, so even being an NBCU production might not save the show.
At 10.00 CSI: New-York was also back in great shape, 13.25 million viewers (+1.1 million) and 3.6 on the demo. Law & Order was somewhat up with 7.47 million viewers and 2.2 on the demo, but that’s its lowest performance against Dirty Sexy Money on ABC, hitting a new series low 5.22 million viewers and a 1.8 on the demo.

How does something so unoriginal, so lame, so horrifying to the senses as “Little Spirit: Christmas in New York” even get made?
In a long line of cheap, shallow, tawdry, trite commercials that try to pass themselves off as “Holiday specials” – Little Spirit takes the whole genre to a new low.
Let’s start with the fact that we have a cast of characters about whom we feel nothing – quite frankly, Leo is simply a boring kid we’re all supposed to feel sorry for because his dog ran away – yet I couldn’t muster the tiniest bit of sympathy for this flat character. The “city of strangers” with whom Leo is supposed to be bonding throughout this hour of misery are nothing but worn-out New York City cliches. The dog is annoying – and Macy’s has yet to grasp the concept of subtlety when it comes to brand placement.
Then we get into the “magical” part – Little Spirit seems like nothing but a cheap rip-off of “Lilo and Stitch” – voice and all – with flashbacks to “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” – but without the fun nor the depth.
If this is the new bar which holiday specials must reach, then God help us, every one.
