Wednesday’s Numbers [11.05.2008]

By fred | November 6, 2008

NumbersLast night was a good night for Fox, because with nothing but - finally - a new episode of Bones, and a rerun of House, the network won the demo ! All that with only 8.41 million viewers, while both ABC and CBS went over 10 million viewers - with 10.48 million and 10.85 million respectively.

At 8.00 after a long while, Bones was finally back, and the special Dancing With The Stars didn’t hurt the show one bit : Bones had one of the best performances of the season with 10.09 million viewers, and a 3.3 on the demo (winner of the slot). Meanwhile on CBS the comedies were down, A million less viewers for New Adventures Of Old Christine (6.57 million) and 1.5 million less for Gary Unmarried (6.44 million). Gary still grew on the demo though, with a 2.1 (vs 1.9 for its lead-in.)

On NBC Knight Rider is a piece of crap, as as predicted the whole “so bad it’s funny” effect is wearing off and people are finally moving on. A new series low with only 5.14 million viewers (down 2 million!) and a 1.6 on the demo (beaten by everyone, including The CW’s America’s Next Top Model with a 2.1). Let’s all laugh at NBC and stupid Silverman for picking up such a piece of crap! Seriously, I hate them.

At 9.00 Criminal Minds was the big winner of the night, most-watched program it went up half a million viewers with 14.29 million and 3.5 on the demo, while Private Practice went to a season high thanks to its lead-in. And while the retention out of the 15.64 million viewers of Dancing With The Stars was far from impressive (61%), the show got close to 10 million viewers (9.54 million) and had a much better retention on the demo (3.3 - 100%)

On NBC was the relocated Life, and while not great I think the results are not bad either, overall. Sure, the show got beat by a rerun of House on Fox, but that was totally expected. Because House is a hit and always performs well even in reruns, and because it had it’s old pal Bones as lead-in. On the other hand, Life had to deal with a crappy, not compatible and falling down Knight Rider, and as always - and like it did last season after Bionic Woman - Life managed to gain viewers, with 700 000 more viewers than its lead-in.

Life had 5.82 million viewers and finally went back to a 2.0 on the demo after a hard time on Fridays. Oh yeah, because if NBC had actually believed and promoted the show, instead of messing it up creatively and endlessly moving it around, it might have helped, too. Right now, Life was on Mondays, then Fridays, then Mondays again, and then back to Friday before ending up on Wednesday now!

If only NBC had believed in the show and put it on a slot it deserved and let it there, it would have been different. I’m also wondering if it might not have been better to put Law & Order at 9.00 and Life at 10.00 — Law & Order is strong & known enough to not need a lead-in, but Life could use one.

Anyways, Law & Order was back at 10.00 with 7.85 million viewers and 2.2 on the demo, considerably lower than last season premiere at 13.46 million viewers and 3.9 on the demo !

Also at 10.00 was CSI: New-York with 11.75 million viewers and 3.3 on the demo, 1.8 million viewers less than last time and a new season low, and Dirty Sexy Money slightly up with 6.25 million viewers and 2.0 on the demo.
