Tuesday’s Numbers

Last night winner is no surprise. With a new American Idol on, Fox was assured to win the night. In fact, as usual with it, it didn’t need anything else to win. Clear winner both in total viewers on the demo, Fox averaged over 20 million viewers overnight while not one other network could even reach 9 million. And they said American Idol was declining and maybe entering its last season when it premiered !
Anyways, since there was nothing really at 8.00, let’s go directly into the next hour. New Amsterdam premiered, and with a lead-in close to 30 million it’s not hard to do well. Which is why 13.7 million viewers for the pilot isn’t such a good thing, since it means more than half the viewers left. Even worst, 2.5 million viewers left the show between its first and last half-hour (14.9 M - 12.4 M)
And if there’s no doubt the second episode of the show will still perform well, since it comes on after Idol again, it will then be facing Lost on ABC so things might start to get harder. And if it ever loose such a strong lead-in, the show might be dead. Especially on Fox, who loves nothing more but to cancel a new show after two or three episodes, if not less.
At 10.00 it was the famous first episode of Jericho that hadn’t been leaked on the Internet prior airing, and so fans hopes for better numbers. Instead, it’s down one million viewers, and only 5.9 million viewers, putting the show dead last on its slot. Now I’ll be honest with you, I don’t see any way that Jericho could be renewed for a third season.
Fans are here, every week, but there’s just not enough of them. Not even 6 million just won’t cut it, and CBS will not have the show back on. Of course, given how things went down the first time, they’ll air all the episodes they have (that’s a total of seven of them, so 3 more to go), but after that they’re done. The only possible way for the Jericho journey not to end there would be to move the show to another network, like The CW or Sci-Fi. And if all the 6 millions of fans keep watching, rest assured they’ll get more seasons, yes, plural form.
As always, all numbers of the night below :
