Tuesday’s Numbers [10.14.2008]

By fred | October 15, 2008

NumbersA typical Tuesday night, CBS winning the night in total viewers while Fox took home the demo. Should be noted though that all in all Fox had a better night, because they also went over 11 million viewers and came second in viewers, whereas CBS only reached a 3.2 on the demo, leaving the second spot to NBC and their 3.3

At 8.00 we had the typical scheme for the night, NCIS was winner of the slot in total viewers with 17.89 million viewers, nothing less than a season-high (the season premiere had 200 000 less viewers), while House and its 12.82 million viewers, slightly better than last episode two weeks ago (12.7 million), won the demo with a 5.1, less than last episode (5.3)

At 9.00 there’s no question that The Mentalist is CBS latest hit, as the show won its slot both in viewers as well as on the demo, beating ABC’s Dancing With The Stars by almost half a million viewers (14.86 million vs 14.37 million; 3.4 vs 3.2 on the demo) The only question would be, why hasn’t The Eye already picked it up for a full season order ??

Anyways, this only left the third place for Fringe, back below the 10 million viewers line (9.53 million), and yet the show managed to win the slot on the demo with a 4.2 — Of course, I’d be curious to see how well the show can do without such a strong lead-in… But for now, though not the hit expected, it is a success.

At 10.00 Without A Trace hit a season low with 10.99 million viewers and a 2.5 on the demo. On NCB it’s funny but apparently no matter how it does, Law & Order: SVU stays very consistent on the demo. After getting 10.2 million viewers two weeks ago, a season-high, the show now hit a season-low with 9.40 million viewers, and yet still a 3.7 on the demo.

Only then came the season premiere of Eli Stone. Despite the promotion and the very strong lead-in (Dancing With The Stars Results, 14.37 million viewers, 3.2 on the demo) the show only averaged 8.82 million viewers and 2.3 on the demo. Per-se, those aren’t bad numbers, and last season’s finale had only 6.1 million viewers and a 2.0 on the demo, so it looks like a nice improvement.

Yet, the last half-hour of Dancing had 14.83 million viewers (3.3 on the demo), meaning despite Eli’s singing and dancing the retention was pretty bad : 61% in viewers, 72% on the demo. Even worse is the huge drop on its second half hour, where only 7.57 million viewers (2.0 on the demo) were still around. That means 2.5 million viewers during the episode — although I hear Dancing ran long so expect the numbers of Eli Stone to go down. Lastly, one year ago Boston Legal used to get 1.4 million more viewers.

ABC is said to love the show, and they did already order four more scripts, but while it is doing better than a year ago, things don’t really look too good for the Alphabet’s prophet. Maybe a different slot with a more compatible lead-in could help ?
