Thursday’s Numbers [10.16.2008]

By fred | October 17, 2008

NumbersAfter a special Thursday last week, we’re now back to normal, with CBS clear winner of the night, CSI most-watched program of the night and Grey’s Anatomy getting its crown back on the demo.

At 8.00 Ugly Betty keeps losing viewers, down to 8.1 million, but at least stays stable on the demo. On NBC things went down : My Name Is Earl lost viewers, down to 6.54 million viewers and 2.6 on the demo, and things were worst - as expected - for Kath & Kim, from 7.5 million to 6.0 million viewers ! Yes, the show lost 1.5 million viewers and 22% on the demo (3.2 to 2.5), and I’m thinking it’s only the beginning…

There were good for Smallville, with 4.15 million viewers and 1.7 on the demo, slight improvement over last week and with Hole In The Wall merely getting 3.62 million viewers (1.4 on the demo), The CW wasn’t the least-watched network of the hour !

At 9.00 Grey’s Anatomy is still not back to its pre-CSI numbers, obviously, but at least they got the demo back. With 14.57 million viewers the medical drama remained pretty stable in viewers (slightly better), and improved on the demo from 5.5 to a 5.8 Last week it wouldn’t have been enough to beat CSI and their 7.0 but that was the season premiere.

The week, CSI went down 4.1 million viewers (from 22.98 million to 18.84 million) and dropped on the demo to a 5.1 Still very good obviously, and it was the most-watched program of the night.

Meanwhile on NBC the SNL Weekend Update special lost about 2 million viewers, and went from a 5.0 to a 4.1 on the demo, but those are still good numbers for NBC. Half an hour earlier The Office was down 900 000 viewers with 8.07 million watching, and 4.1 on the demo. SNL managed to grow in viewers, so all is good for NBC - for now.

The sad news comes from The CW where the latest installment of Supernatural went down a bit, with only 3.06 million viewers and 1.2 on the demo (3.14 million and 1.4 one week ago). Too bad, because the episode was awesome, pure Supernatural fun!

At 10.00 we have a brand new deal on our hands. Last week winner is now the loser : Life On Mars dropped from its 11.60 million viewers/3.8 on the demo one week ago to only 8.47 million viewers and 2.7 on the demo ! And this is on ABC, where lead-in Grey’s Anatomy was actually performing better than last week. On CBS on the other hand, lead-in CSI was down but that was fine with Eleventh Hour, going up to 12.04 million viewers - though it went down on the demo from 3.4 last week to a 3.2 last night. Even more worrying for Life On Mars is the loss of 1.42 million viewers and 20% on the demo from its first to second half-hour.

Meanwhile on NBC for the departure of Maura Tierney there were 8.81 million viewers in front of E.R. — so about half a million less than last week. The show also went down on the demo from 4.0 to 3.5, but let’s remember that (a) lead-in was weaker, and (b) those are still good numbers for NBC, especially when it was enough to make E.R. winner of the slot on the demo !
