Thursday’s Numbers [09.25.2008]
By fred | September 26, 2008
Last night was the first big Thursday, and the winner of the night was clearly ABC. Of course, with a two-hour season premiere for Grey’s Anatomy and no CSI opposing it on CBS, the road was quite open for The Alphabet. Averaging 15.46 million viewers overnight and a 6.0 on the demo, things were pretty good. Thanks to Survivor CBS manager to hold and was a good second spot.
At 8.00 said Survivor won the slot with 13.05 million viewers, followed by the season premiere of Ugly Betty with 9.78 million viewers and a 3.3 on the demo - which is quite down, losing 1.4 million to last season’s premiere (11.16 million, 3.9 on the demo). On NBC things were also not too good, My Name Is Earl returning for its new season with only 6.40 million viewers and 2.7 on the demo, that’s over 2 million fans gone since last season opener, 8.66 million viewers and 3.8 on the demo, and 700 000 fans gone from last season’s finale (7.1 million, 3.0 on the demo).
For its second episode, Smallville was holding nicely to new competition, only 300 000 viewers less with 4.10 million viewers.
At 9.00 it was of course all about Grey’s Anatomy, back with 18.30 million viewers and 7.2 on the demo ! Grey’s Anatomy was the highest rated show of the night, in total viewers a well as on the demo. The best part being that the show was not only strong, but its second hour performed even better, going from 7.2 to 7.6 on the demo. Nothing but good news, even though of course last season the show opened with 20.93 million viewers and 8.8 on the demo.
Meanwhile on NBC it was good news, as the fantastic season premiere of The Office was followed by 9.20 million viewers (4.9 on the demo), which is not only better than last season finale (8.1 million viewers, 4.1 on the demo) but also a nice gain over lead-in My Name Is Earl.
On The CW the competition was obviously tougher for Supernatural, so it was expected to go down, and it did : 3.25 million viewers were still watching, that is 750 000 viewers less than last week. Given the competition from Grey’s Anatomy or The Office, that’s pretty good.
At 10.00 and, of course, way below Grey’s Anatomy, a rerun of CSI managed to do better than the season premiere of E.R. (9.40 vs 7.92 million viewers), even though the medical drama was better on the demo (3.3 vs 2.6) Results are still really not food for E.R. losing about 2 million viewers from its lead-in, and also opening with 2 million less viewers than last season did.
