Monday’s Numbers

By fred | September 2, 2008

NumbersLast night was pretty much the kick-off of the fall season, so let’s have a look at the numbers as usual. Of course the big thing was the return for its fourth season of Prison Break, and the results are… disappointing. It wasn’t horrible, but the show only managed to win the demo for its second hour, nothing more. But at least it was enough to make Fox winner of the night on the demo, so it’s not all bad.

But NBC and their Deal Or No Deal managed to get the most-watched show of the night (10.9 million, 2.6), and thus the Peacock was the most-watched network last night. At 8.00 the game was both number one in viewers and on the demo, then came Prison Break with 6.2 million viewers and 2.5 on the demo. The other returning series at that time was Gossip Girl of course, and The CW has reasons to be happy.

Back with 3.4 million viewers and a 1.7 on the demo, the show didn’t suddenly became the most-watched show on TV, but it performed as well as its series premiere last year, even better on the demo (3.5 million, 1.6) so it’s all good. All that without lead-in, and adding to that how The CW is reporting its best ratings ever for Gossip Girl in adults 18-34 (2.3), women 18-34 (3.2), adults 18-49 (1.7), and women 18-49, and all is well.

At 9.00 Prison Break was up with now 6.6 million viewers (and 2.8 on the demo). I find it deeply sad that the most-watched program at that time was a rerun of Two And A Half Men (7.9 million), but at least Prison Break took the demo - in fact the second hour was the number one program of the night in the demo. Overall the two-hour season premiere didn’t do wonders (6.5 million, 2.7), loosing 1 million viewers over last year’s season premiere (7.5 million, 3.3)

Of course the show is getting older every year, pushing back each time the limits of ridiculousness, so it’s bound to get people to loose interest. This shark-jumping year being what it is, I say if the show can average 6.5 million this season they should be happy.
