Monday’s Numbers
By fred | April 1, 2008
Last night was a classic Monday night, and again if ABC managed to win the night in total viewers, CBS was a winner on the beloved 18-49 demo.
At 8.00 there was no more Britney-effect for How I Met Your Mother, and of course the million viewers gained from it didn’t come back, I guess only CBS might be surprised to hear about that. Still, How I Met Your Mother doesn’t need anyone, as this awesome episode proved, and it was one again close to 10 million viewers (9.7 million) and nicely grew from The Big Bang Theory by 1 million viewers and 30% on the demo !
I can’t see any reason why someone, anyone, would renew The Big Bang Theory but not How I Met Your Mother - clearly a much better choice, and show.
At 9.00 Two And A Half Men once again had 14.3 million viewers, and following that The New Adventures Of Old Christine ended their season on a season high with 12.4 million viewers ! It’s not just that it was a season finale, but I’m hearing old friend George Costanza Jason Alexander came by as well.
Meanwhile New Amsterdam on Fox isn’t doing so well. Sure, 300 000 more viewers than last week, but still last on its slot (except for The CW) and it lost almost 1 million viewers from its lead-in, a rerun of House - which also performed better on the demo (2.6 vs 2.1). I guess the numbers from Terminator don’t look so bad now, uh Fox ?
Finally at 10.00 the clear winner was still CSI: Miami with 15.5 million viewers, but Medium did quite well growing by 700 000 viewers over last week.

Give me a break. How I Met Your Mother is doing better for one reason and one reason only. It is the time period change. There are simply more people watching at 8:30 than at 8:00. HIMYM and BBT are getting basically the same shares. HIMYM is getting higher ratings, because more people (and especially younger people) are watching at 8:30. If they reversed the two shows, the ratings would reverse again. The two shows are about equal.
I’m not denying that the slot helps, of course not. Yes, HIMYM improved with the new slot, and reversing the shows would probably get them to switch again. That doesn’t change the fact that Big Bang never grew by 30% on the demo when it was at 8.30 !
You can say it’s the slot, but I think that don’t explain it all. And at the very least they would be equals, so you don’t renew one and not the other.
Still, Mother actually does better (also remember it’s its third season, not first!) and is a much better show, when it comes to, you know, quality…
