Monday’s Numbers

Last night wasn’t the greatest night, given than all networks average below 10 million viewers ! It was close, but somehow CBS was able to win the night in total viewers as well as on the demo.
At 8.00 premiered yet another legal drama on Fox, and it’s going to be canceled really soon. It’s a miracle if the show gets to have all its completed episode on the air, because it really didn’t do well : only 7.6 million viewers tuned in to see Canterbury’s Law ! Of course, when you know the most-watched program at that time only had 100 000 more viewers, it may put things into perspective.
Still, that’s really not good, especially for a series premiere, but the worst part is the demo. If you forget about The CW and their rerun of Gossip Girl (1.2 million, 0.5) then Canterbury’s Law was the only show from its slot that wasn’t able to go above 2 on the demo, scoring only a very low 1.7 Needless to say this isn’t good, really not, especially for Fox. Because we still live in a post-strike world I’d say the show might be back next week, but had there been no strike I’m not sure Fox would have let it happen.
And 9.00 on Fox was another new series, already on its third episode but for the first time it did not have American Idol as lead-in, and it actually did pretty well. Growing from its lead-in by 1.2 million New Amsterdam was followed by 8.8 million viewers, and did much better on the demo (2.5)
This is good, but let’s be honest this isn’t that good : Terminator used to do much better than that. Yes, it ended with a two-hour finale around 8 million viewers, but it performed much better in the demo, and used to do better in total viewers as well in the first episodes. And even when hitting a series low at 7.1 million viewers, Terminator still was stronger on the demo (2.7)
So that plus the fact that Terminator adds close to 2 million viewers from DVR viewing, and I’d say the show should get its second season, especially if - as producers have said recently - it’s not as expensive to produce as people think. And for New Amsterdam, let’s say there might still be hope.
Finally for its 2-hour finale October Road didn’t really impress, with only 4.7 million viewers, putting it again dead last in viewers and on the demo at 10.00 I’d say ABC will probably not renew the show for one more year.
