Monday’s Numbers [10.27.2008]

By fred | October 28, 2008

NumbersLast night CBS was in rerun mode, leaving ABC to win the night pretty easily. Don’t think CBS was poorly performing though, especially on Monday nights their lineup remains pretty strong, even in reruns, as illustrated by the second spot The Eye took on the demo for the night, with a 3.1 — In the end, is that good news for CBS, or bad news for ABC and the other nets?

At 8.00 the CBS comedies remained pretty strong, each getting more viewers than a new episode of Chuck on NBC, where a competition of reruns didn’t really help as the show lost 200 000 viewers since last week. As for Josh Schwartz’s other series, Gossip Girl, it remained stable with 3.02 million viewers and 1.6 on the demo which, all things considered, is a better result than Chuck’s.

At 9.00 it’s worth nothing that the rerun of Gary Unmarried at 9.30 did benefit from a strong lead-in, rerun or not. There were 11.72 million viewers watching a Two And A Half Men rerun, and 8.59 million viewers (2.9 on the demo) stayed for Gary Unmarried, which is a series high for the show, the series high for a new episode on Wednesdays being at 7.9 million viewers (2.5 on the demo). Retention for Gary was also better than Worst Week, with 73% in viewers and 76% on the demo where Worst Week only had 68% in viewers and 63% on the demo one week ago.

Meanwhile Samantha Who? on ABC gained 400 000 viewers with 11.45 million and 3.0 on the demo, quite disappointing when you know that’s only a 56% retention out of the 20.34 million viewers of its lead-in (4.6 on the demo).

After a high last week, One Tree Hill was down to a low 3.14 million viewers and 1.7 on the demo. On NBC the fall continues for Heroes, down to a series low at 8.15 million viewers and 3.9 on the demo. It’s really not good, and going down - the show lost 300 000 viewers since last week - and yet don’t worry, there will be a fourth season. That’s a no-brainer, because over 8 million viewers and 3.8 on the demo is actually really great for NBC (how sad is that?), when their entire schedule is falling apart thanks to the wonders of one Ben Silverman.

Take My Own Worst Enemy for example, down to a new series low with only 5.25 million viewers and 2.3 on the demo, and much like for its lead-in, if not worse, the fall isn’t going to stop any time soon. For the record, the last airing of Life on the same slot, on October 6th, had half a million more viewers, with a lead-in performing pretty much the same (it was, until last night, Heroes’ series low, with 8.2 million viewers as well).

With a rerun of CSI: Miami CBS won the slot, while Boston Legal remained pretty stable with 9.10 million viewers and 2.3 on the demo. With a little luck next week, My Own Worst Enemy will finish finally last on the demo for the slot.
