Monday’s Numbers [09.29.2008]

By fred | September 30, 2008

NumbersBiggest night of television of the week last night, so who’s the winner ? Overall it was ABC in total viewers (16.16 million) thanks to Dancing With The Stars, and CBS on the demo (3.9) thanks to Two And A Half Men – although ABC was a close second with 3.8

On to the things we care about : At 8.00 it was of course Dancing With The Stars leading its slot, then came How I Met Your Mother with 8.81 million viewers and 3.7 on the demo, followed by its lead-in The Big Bang Theory with 8.76 million viewers and 3.5 on the demo. Both shows did slightly less than one week ago (HIMYM losing a bit more) but are still performing very well, being #2 and #3 both in viewers and on the demo for the slot, so all is good there.

Meanwhile on NCB it was the return of Chuck, the show NCB already picked up for a full 22-episode season order even before the first episode aired. And how did this first episode do ? Well, not really good I’m afraid! With only 6.62 million viewers, I’m sure NBC expected quite more. Last season opened with 9.28 million viewers and ended with with 7.02 million, so no, no good. At least the second half-hour was stronger than the first, so there’s always that.

On Fox the latest Terminator installment was down again, 300 000 viewers less than a week ago. This is really not good, 5.53 million viewers and a 2.0 on the demo really isn’t good, and while the show is pretty good and a movie is coming up, if those numbers don’t go up (not to stay don’t stop going down) the show won’t get another season, though I can’t see it not get a full season pickup with the movie and all — though going below 5 million viewers and 2.0 on the demo would be a start…

On The CW it’s a different story, the same one we get every Monday : 3.54 million viewers for Gossip Girl, even better than a week ago (3.4 million) including on the demo (1.9 vs 1.6) for what was probably the best episode so far, the show clearly couldn’t be doing any better. I guess The CW is saved, despite 90210!

At 9.00 ABC was still up there with the most-watched program of the night, though Two And A Half Men managed to do better on the demo. For its third episode this season, Heroes was slightly down to 9.34 million viewers and 4.5 on the demo. It’s going down (the two first episodes last week averaged 9.9 million, and 5.0) and not too much, and with 4.5 on the demo NBC has to be pleased.

Another bad news for Fox though, because Prison Break only had 5.26 million viewers, a new season-low, series-low even. So far it seemed the show had about 6 million fans every week, but they’re starting to go away and that’s not good… adding to that a fall on the demo too (down to 2.0) and the A-Team is in trouble…

Speaking of which, on CBS the new comedies aren’t doing so well, Worst Week losing about 4.5 million viewers with only 9.31 million viewers (11.0 million last week), and a 3.1 on the demo while its lead-in was the highest program of the night with a 4.7 ! Sounds pretty bad.

Finally at 10.00 was the return of Life to NBC, and maybe it’s because I love the show so much, but I’ll go with “pretty okay”. With 6.92 million viewers the show was last on its slot, and down from last season’s finale (7.64 million viewers), but on the other hand the show was up on the demo (2.8 vs 2.5) and shall I remind everyone that, much like Chuck by the way, last time it was on the air was back in 2007 !! Also, both series have had their premiere episode available for a week on Hulu and ComCast.

And if Boston Legal had more viewers (9.80 million), Life did better on the demo (2.8 vs 2.4). Also, for a good second half of last season, the show averaged 6.6 million viewers and 2.4 on the demo. On that note, the show was up, and if it doesn’t go down too much on Friday, it’s good, right? I don’t know; Seeing how NBC is burning episodes and sending the show to Fridays, it’s hard to tell what they can expect from it, if they even expect anything at all or just don’t plan on ever picking it up for a full season order. They better pick it up, and renew it, though, because this is one of the three best shows television has to offer right now.
