Monday’s numbers [09.22.2008]

This is it, fall season kicking in and too many shows to watch in one night. Choices has to be made, and in the end the heroes aren’t necessarily whom you thought they’d be… Although there’s (sadly) no surprise in the fact that ABC was the most-watched network, thanks to a two-hour Dancing With The Stars going over 21 million viewers.
On CBS the comedy night was back, and with pretty good episodes. It’s all that people wanted, and both shows are up : The Big Bang Theory was watched by 9.4 million viewers (3.6 on the demo), up 2 million viewers compared to last season’s finale. Half an hour later How I Met Your Mother won 800 000 viewers since its finale last season, with 9.7 million viewers and a 4.0 on the demo. The show also started this season in better shape than last year, with 1.4 more million viewers than for last season’s premiere.
Meanwhile Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles managed to gain back 300 000 viewers and was up one the demo as well since last week, all that while facing a lot more competition, which isn’t a bad thing. Of course, 5.8 million viewers and 2.3 on the demo are still disappointing. But the show is good, and I have faith in Sarah Connor.
On The CW things aren’t as good as last week’s high, but with 3.4 million viewers and a 1.6 on the demo it’s as good as the season premiere for Gossip Girl and better than last season, so all is well there.
At 9.00 the comedy night continue on CBS, and Two And A Half Men is still a rating hit : 14.9 million viewers and a 5.3 on the demo. Of course with such a lead-in it was easy for new series Worst Week to go above 10 million viewers, but the expectations were even higher. 11.0 million viewers (74% retention) is not good, not with such a strong lead-in, not when last year’s occupant Rules Of Engagement had a much stronger retention (83%), not good, especially not for a series premiere.
On Fox we find the same fanbase as last week it seems, Prison Break pulling out 6.0 million viewers and a 2.5 on the demo. In other words, the show lost fans, they’re only about 6 million left so far, so about 1.5 million are gone, but it looks like those who stayed are not going anywhere.
Then of course on NBC it was the big return : Heroes was back ! I still haven’t gotten around to see the episode, so I can’t comment yet whether or not it was the fresh restart everyone said it would be, but the numbers tend to indicate otherwise. The first episode got only 10.2 million viewers, down from last year’s finale 11.1 million viewers, and way down from last year’s premiere 17.0 million viewers !
On the demo NBC drama pulled out a 5.0 which is nice and why it’s not in danger, NBC needs such good performer on the demo, but we’re way down the 7.3 of last season’s premiere. Even worse : at 10.00 the second episode of Heroes was loosing viewers, down to only 9.6 million viewers. Not good, really not.
In fact, at 10.00 CSI: Miami was having a great start, opening its season with 16.9 million viewers and a 5.1 on the demon making the show winner of its slot both in total viewers and on the demo. Meanwhile, Boston Legal doesn’t look good, down from the 21.2 million viewers of its lead-in to a mere 9.4 million viewers (2.5 on the demo), which is about one million less viewers than last year.
