Vampires are better treated on HBO: True Blood already renewed for a second season

By fred | September 17, 2008

True BloodHere’s a news that will probably get Moonlight fans even more pissed that their beloved show was on CBS and not elsewhere : after only its second airing, Alan Ball’s new series True Blood had already been renewed by HBO.

It’s really really a surprise, because Ball already created for HBO the Emmy-winning series Six Feet Under, and after a premiere watched by 1.4 million viewers, the show was up 24% last Sunday with 1.6 million viewers. The 10.30 rerun drew another 800 000 viewers for a total of 2.4 million viewers, up from the 2.1 million of the series premiere one week ago. Those aren’t Moonlight numbers, but we’re not talking about CBS either here, obviously.

Although what’s really irritating here, is that True Blood isn’t that good, really. I watched both episodes and I’ll keep watching (for now), but while I do like the opening credits and there’s always some nice cliffhanger by the end of each episode, the vampires there are pretty “cheap” (no really, each time I see one going vampire with his little teeth, it just makes me laugh…) and the main story not that interesting to me so far… let’s hope it’ll get better in time. And now, there’s time.

In other news, TNT picked up Steven Bochco’s really not (that) good Raising The Bar and renewed Saving Grace for a third season.

Wow..that’s amazing. Why oh, why couldn’t Moonlight have been on HBO?? Ackkk

I have to agree with you about “True Blood” not being “that good”. I watched the first episode.. really wanting to like it. Something to fill that “Moonlight” void. I’m not into the “teen” Twilight thing..so I was hoping this show would do the trick. It didn’t! With “Moonlight” I had been hooked the first time. While the show improved over the season (despite losing showrunners, the strike, etc).. the first few episodes weren’t perfect either, but there was something there that captivated me. Not so with “True Blood”.

The characters were hokey and sterotypical. The accents were annoying. I hadn’t seen the episode yet when I spent some time with a woman from Louisiana. She kept apologizing to people saying “We aren’t all like that” when talking about “True Blood”. When I finally watched the show, I knew why she had been saying that.

The vampires were NOT sexy.. sorry..even Bill just didn’t do it for me. The story was all over the place. I don’t know if they tried to cram too much into an opening episode or what, but it didn’t work. And while I don’t mind a cliff hanger ending.. I prefer that it be a “back ground” story.. with each episode having a main “stand alone” story. I do DVR shows I like, but I often miss a couple.. so I’d rather not miss anything big. And on top of that.. the acting wasn’t even that good. I’d expect more from Anna Paquin. I usually like her, but in this she was “over the top”.

I haven’t watched the second episode yet.. it’s DVR’d because I really wanted to give this show a chance, but I just don’t think it’s going to be a show that I “plan” on watching like I did “Moonlight”.

I’m not pissed about this, its a more a feeling of disappointment that while HBO recognizes that vampires are “in” and are a valuable commodity for their financial aspirations, CBS apparently didn’t have that foresight.

After watching the first 3 episodes of “True Blood”, I just wonder: why? That show is definitely a “Moonlight-wannabe”, BUT fails to be! Sookie is blonde, and so was Beth; Bill is dark hair, blue eyes, and so was Mick. The story though is plotless, boring, and doesn’t have the sparks that Moonlight provided on a weekly basis.
It is not by adding sex to a show that it will make it better than another.
HBO should have taken Moonlight over from CBS if they had wanted to produce a quality and interesting Vampire show.

3 episodes of TB were more than enough for me to watch. I’d rather re-watch Moonlight on DVD…
