Supernatural losing Dean, soon to enter its final season !!!

By fred | May 26, 2008

At least when a show is canceled too soon, you can always have the memories and dreams of how great it could have been, while on the other hand you have to face the reality of those seasons that shouldn’t have had happened, you can’t ignore them, they’re here, they’ve been done, they aired, they’re on DVDs, it’s a fact. Which is why what ABC did with Lost, giving everyone a definite date for its end and the number of episodes left, is definitely the greatest thing ever.

Because you know you’ll get answers, the show won’t disappear before it’s given a chance to get there, but it will not go on for too long and deliver answers that don’t make sense by the time it get there. For instance, I was/am a fan of The X-Files, it’s really a great show, but in the end it simply wasn’t The X-Files anymore. Mulder was gone, Scully was gone, everything that made the show was gone, and I think for any fans of the show those last seasons must have been really painful.

SupernaturalAnd you can pretend they didn’t happen, and not buy the DVDs, but it still happened. And when we’re talking about serialized show, it’s even worse because all answers and closure don’t come by the last good season, but during those shitty ones. And sometimes, because it went on for too long, nothing makes sense anymore. Still today, see Prison Break. You might have forgotten about it by now, but the show was great, that first season was pretty amazing no less!

I know many didn’t love the second season, but I thought that they managed it pretty well. Only one season would have been the best, but adding one wasn’t terrible. It wasn’t really the same show, and there were still huge problems like in credibility, but it still worked for me. Or it would have, if everything had stopped there. But they were pushed and pushed, and we had the disaster of last season. And they’ve been pushed and pushed again, and now we’ll have a fourth season, with dead people brought back to life - much like in 24, except in 24 they weren’t actually beheaded !

The greatest thing that can happen to a show is that people care about it enough to know where they want to go with it, and when they need to end things. If Seinfeld is still today the greatest sitcom ever, it is also largely due to the fact that they knew when to end things, and Eric Kripke knows that, and loves his show enough to have the same desire to end things right.

We sort of have this five-year map. And Jared and Jensen like the idea of a five-year map because we work them so hard. It’s possible, but I don’t know… But a lot of these issues are beyond my control at the corporate level with ratings, etc. But my personal feeling is that I still want to go out in year five. It’s better to go out strong and on top than to be 8 or 9 years into a piece of sh*t. You want conclusions… you want to end it. It’s an epic story and epic stories deserve a good ending.

I couldn’t agree more, and I don’t think any true fan would disagree here. So while we might secretly dream the show would be around for years and years to come, if everyone working there agrees that it should end after a fifth season, then that’s how it should go. Clearly Kripke and his team have a plan for the show, and that is what will allow the show to be great all the way till the end, that is, as long as they’re allowed to follow their plan.

When you’re creating this type of stories, you want to go out on top — when you’re still creatively effective — and you tend to inevitably get a little floppy in the storytelling when you go too long. So you want to pull the plug on the patient before you get a little too deteriorated. Also, this kind of a story, that has an epic sweep and has heroes and demons and the end of the world, you want the saga to come to an end definitely, and you want to watch a final episode that doesn’t peter out like a limp balloon. You want it to end so when you cut to black, you can truly say, “That is the end of that story.” So, I’m really campaigning hard to do that.

So, when do you want this show to end ? Are you ready to show your support to get The CW to end the show in a couple of years ? (Of course, for that we need The CW to still be around next year, and renew the show for a fifth season, but let’s not go into this for now…)

I think that any good show should go out when it’s on top. Friends did it, and so did Seinfeld, and they’ll be in syndication forever!

Kripke knew and still knows where this story is heading, and if he says it’s 5 years, then I’ll be happy to have had such a wonderful 5 years.

This show is amazing, and so is it’s fandom. I think that most of us appreciate the genius of its creator, and trust him to know what’s best. At least we know well in advance, so we’re not disappointed when there’s no 6th season (and I won’t even entertain the thought that it wouldn’t get picked up for a 5th).

Not to be nit-picky, Fred, but it’s “losing” not “loosing” (the latter would be if you were, say, loosing your dogs on a burglar). Sorry, just a pet peeve :)

Glad you cleared up EK’s joke about CMM taking over the role of Dean, though. It was getting a bit old lol Thanks for the fun article!
