Supergirl coming your way

By fred | July 12, 2007

Laura VandervoortHere we go with yet another series regular casting news, and Smallville’s supergirl, Clark’s cousin Kara, will be played by Canadian Laura Vandervoort.

She might be a little older than her character, but who cares in a show where teenagers are portrayed by thirty-something actors, right?

Where does she come from and why did we never heard of her before, well, spoiler…

Yes, Clark has a cousin, and she’s on Earth as well! Coming from Krypton just like he does Clark, as she “was sent to Earth in a ship that arrived at the same time as baby Kal-El’s” reveals executive producer Al Gough.

So where was she during the past 16 years? Well, turns out “there was a problem and she’s been in suspended animation for the last 16 years. We’ll find out in the season premiere that the big dam break in last season’s finale is the reason she’s finally awoken.

Kara used to be older than cousin Clark, but as she didn’t grow up while on “suspended animation” things are now reversed, and once again Clark will have to be the more mature voice of reason. So things are changing… not.

And it is said that he’ll be busy on that job, because “she may be Clark Kent’s cousin, but that doesn’t mean she’s going to be the obedient one! We’ve wanted a character to shake things up!

And Clark’s job might not be so easy, since sharing the same origins she does also share all of his super powers, and then some! Not only will she have his powers, but also some he has yet to develop, because, well, as she’ll explain “obviously girls mature faster than boys“. Right.

Reports says than one of her power Clark will be jealous of is… flying. Shocker. And here I was thinking that Clark did fly on his own in previous episodes, like when catching up on a Luthor’s flight he had missed, or to show off for girls such as Lana or Lois.
Maybe he was always under the influence and never really realized he could fly, I guess.

Obviously, she won’t let people indifferent, and one of the people to get intrigued by the new girl in town will be no other than a big fan of the whole family, Lex Luthor.
She will also potentially be a love interest for Jimmy Olsen. Whatever happen between him and Chloe I don’t know, maybe she turned into a real freak and they had to lock her up into 33.1?

Gough says this latest visitor from the DC Comics universe “will help Clark get in touch with his Kryptonian roots. With his [adopted] father dead and his [adopted] mother moved to Washington [to become a U.S. Senator], and Lana blown up, suddenly there’s some family in his life.

Kara will make her debut during the season premiere and is scheduled to appear in about half of this season’s episodes.
