StrikeTV coming soon, and other online series that are actually good
By fred | August 8, 2008
Aw, the strike ! Anybody remember those good times ? It was late 2007/early 2008, there was pretty much nothing on TV but reruns, reruns, and American Idol. And outside, in the streets of L.A. or New-York, it was crowed with writers. They were on strike, and it was for a big deal about Internet revenues, online distribution and all those “new media” talks.
And while some were doing the fight, others were having pizza and drinking beer. Also, they thought they could do their own shit without having to bother dealing with the networks, or as Joss Whedon recently said it, “putting power in other hands, the wrong hands“. Yes, Joss Whedon’s awesome Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog is the perfect example of this, a made-for-the-Internet creation done without any big media/network involved, a brilliant piece of art, and a hit, too.
But Whedon wasn’t the only one who thought about doing things on their own, many other writers had the same idea, and together created an Internet fundraiser, future online channel, StrikeTV. And since this is summer and there isn’t that much on TV, let’s have a look at a few alternatives…
Curious about StrikeTV ? Wonder what it will look like ? Well, here’s a little teaser filled with what looks like plenty of fun, for sure :
And if you want more, there’s more. Do you love The Office ?? I sure do, and two writers of the show, Lester Lewis and Mindy Kaling, are working on their own show for StrikeTV as we speak. Here’s what Lewis recently said about their collaboration :
When I first heard about Strike TV, I was excited. I’ve had a great career as a writer on The Office and many other comedies, but I’ve also been hungry to get my own voice out there. The normal development route for television is tough. I’ve actually sold and written three pilot scripts (two for NBC, one for CBS) but for various reasons they weren’t shot. Strike TV, it seemed, could give me a forum to experiment. I was fortunate to link up with the super-talented Mindy Kaling, another Office writer who also plays the role of Kelly, and we hatched an idea for a funny web series. Collaborating was a blast and we used a lot of our Office crew friends for the shoot. It was a really fun experience and we’re hoping to do more.
That was more than enough to get me interested, adding to that the little “behind the scenes” teaser below and I can’t wait to see the result !
