Strike Update : How will you favorite shows be affected ?

By fred | January 1, 2008

Well today seemed as good a time as any other to update the grid of how the strike affects your favorite series done in the past already.

Again you will have a first chart with as many series as I could get info about, and for each of them how many episodes already aired, how many should be done and waiting in the can (written & produced), and then what we all care about, how many are left - as of today, 01/01/08. I’ve also added how many episodes have been ordered.

How will you favorite shows be affected ?

And now, the same data ordered alphabetically by show’s names :

Why aren’t the networks showing those episodes of shows that are finished? If they have unaired episodes “in the can” as you say, why aren’t they being shown instead of the reruns?

Roxanne: Basically, because they try to have fresh episodes to air for as long as they can. Given how the still even refuse to talk with the WGA, the strike might last a while unfortunately.

And the sooner they run out of new episodes to air, the sooner they’re in trouble. So, they try to hold on for long, very long…

I just read that the new episodes of Bones might not air before April 28 !! Jesus, the strike better be over sooner than that or I’ll die!

    Denise: You’re very welcome!

I really enjoy the abc shows but am getting pretty tired of the reruns early on in the season. Even with the strike several of the shows I like still have new shows they can show so why aren’t they being aired? It makes it difficult to want to get involved with a new show…because as soon as you do…it either goes into reruns, goes off completely or moves to a night I cannot be available….If you are trying to compete for views why not try a little consistancy for a change….show the whole season with out all the games. Just show the shows

Here’s a novel idea. The actors and actresses should offer to take a pay cut so the writers can be given more money. I mean really what exactly do these people do that they deserve all those millions? Are they saving people from burning buildings, or teaching the youth of our country, or even getting shot at or cursed as our police do? They want to help, take the paycut! The writers don’t need pizzas or stars with signs. The whole country is struggling to pay their bills and try to have some kind of normal life, and I for one am getting sick and tired of hearing about all these “stars” and their personal problems. Walk in the rest of the country’s shoes and then you can come talk to me!!!

Carol you’re right, but we’re talking about the same people here who cancel great shows after a couple of episodes only, or don’t renew a serialized drama after a season making sure viewers won’t get any closure/answers…

To them, holding on to their last new episodes so that they air new things for months and months is a good idea, even if that means one episode per month!

On top of that, they keep changing the date and slot those episodes are scheduled to air, and in the end they’ll probably just loose even more viewers, but at this this you have to wonder if they care, given how they refuse to even talk with the WGA so that they could end this already way too long strike…

Nancy: Yes actors gets paid a lot, but so does producers & studios. They get an awful lot of money as well you know.

And right now, when episodes are distributed/air online, only the networks are making money out of it, and that’s (one of) the issue here, actors offering a paycut wouldn’t change the fact that online distribution needs to be covered for the future.

If you need to be mad at someone, it’s networks & studios, it’s the AMPTP, they are the ones refusing a fair deal, refusing to pay writers for their work, and even refusing to talk!

I love men in trees and waiting is torture for me a new fan. Its oddly convenient that there hasn’t been any new episodes after such a cliffhanger like Jack lost at sea. I can be patient about the coming episodes, my only request is if there are 12 finished episodes that they be showed to us on a scheduled date and time. Even if its only once a month. I mean those are enough for a year while the writers fight for what they are worth!

Well, first of all, what is this strike anyway? Are the writers striking for pay raises (can’t think of any other reason, but the one thing I haven’t found is the info on the actual strike). Secondly, I have been progressively losing interest in television anyway. There are several shows I like, but it isn’t worth trying to follow a show anymore. The commercial breaks get longer and more invasive all the time with less and less content. Networks are constantly switching up program times to promote new programs during time slots designated for something else. And by the time you count in all the not-so-special “specials” it can be 3 weeks between one episode and the next. In my view, if networks don’t respect the viewers- OUR lives, OUR busy schedules, the time we set aside to make ourselves available to watch the couple of shows we have committed our attention to- WITHOUT jerking us around, trying to get us hooked on more and more programming, and shove more and more commercials into our little time slots we carve our to relax from the day- then basically, I’m done with TV. When you look at it like that, even your favorite shows mean a lot less and become much less interesting. Plus, here’s an upside. I’ve gotten hooked on renting entire seasons on DVD. That way you can watch your show continuously, on your schedule, commercial-free. Try it.

Adriane: Mainly, what they’re asking for is residuals over “new media”. So that they get paid for Internet/online distribution of episodes as well.
Right now, they get nothing because networks are lying, pretending that there’s no money to be made out of it at this time (while announcing billions of profit online at the same time…) or claim that it is only “promotion”, even though it’s he full episodes, with advertising!

This is important not only because networks are making money streaming content online or getting online content produced, but also because the contract signed will go on for years to come, and in the future “new media” are likely to be the main, if not only, way of distribution.

Regarding what you said about TV, it is true that networks are treating viewers like crap, when it comes to schedule, to putting annoying ads during the show promoting whatever crap comes next, or even cancelling new series after only a couple of episodes !

This is why more and more people think as you do and turn away from television, one way or another (DVR helps to skip ads, or wait to be sure more than 2 or 3 episodes will air before you invest time in a new series…), and the way they’re dealing with writers and this strike isn’t going to help any, sadly.
