Stop worrying about 24 after every news! Delay might be good…

By fred | August 21, 2007

OMG people, I understand you were disappointed - to day the least - by last season of Fox drama 24, and it took a while for producers to admit the season sucked, but they eventually did it.

24And yes, the season did start off quite bad with the whole original plot of Day 7 trashed out, leaving producers & writers having to start it all over again.

But producers did acknowledge that season 6 sucked, that there wasn’t enough of Jack Bauer, who - shall I remind them - is the show (really, he is), and they do have some great ideas for next season…

So everyone now needs to stop panicking and seeing every news coming out relating to the show as a bad sign. It’s been reported recently that production of the show was once again beeing delayed, shooting being pushed back from August 27 to September 10, in order to allow writers more time to finish a few scripts (as they need to be ahead of shooting to keep things smoothly).

Then, flame started from everywhere. People started to worry again, to claim that writers had no idea where the season would go, were running out of ideas, that after the catastrophic sixth season and the original plot being trashed out, this was only one more sign that season seven would be a mess again…

WTF!??

Yes, it is the second delay for 24 this season, as production was originally meant to resume in late July, and then delayed to August after the original storyline was dropped.

Yes, moving away from Los Angeles and leaving CTU behind are great ideas, but they had good ideas on the first few episodes on season six as well. And most likely, 24 won’t move away from a good part of its own clichés and surrealistic plots ; that doesn’t mean we should not have faith.
After all, season five was a huge success.

But the more important thing isn’t whether or not you (still) have faith in the writers & producers of the show, it is that not every delay is a bad sign !

Sure, the first delay was bad, can’t argue there. But how could people see this second one as a bad sign too? This is not a indication of anything bad, au contraire.

Writers and producers did not want to rush into production with half-written storylines, they refused to have to guess things along the way and try to fix holes while episodes were being shot, instead they asked for another delay. They decided it was better to take more time, make sure the scripts were all finished and good, and once it was all solid & everyone was ready, only then would they start production.

Read that again, and tell me how this could possibly be a bad sign ?!?

I am getting so sick and tired of reading reactions such as “writers are having a bit of trouble this season coming up with new story ideas“, “another dramatic sign for 24’s new season” and others “it’s not a good sign for a series to scramble like this“.
What the hell would you want, for them to go into production with half-finished scripts and no idea where the show was going? Do you want another season six??

I for one am pleased by this news, I believe it’s a great thing that they really are aware of the pressure over their shoulders, they know all fans and critics and other viewers are expecting a lot from the upcoming season, especially after last one, and they’d rather wait a little more but came up with well-thought scripts and ideas than risking another failure.

Of course, this does not necessary mean that what they’ll come up with will be great, maybe Day 7 will not turn out very good despite all that, but writers seems to have their minds right, and we too need to calm down and think before judging whatever happens around the show in a bad way.

Truth is, I always enjoyed watching the show (well, kind of..) and I wouldn’t actually mind if they were to announce that there wouldn’t be no 24 this season. It won’t happen of course, I don’t think Fox’s execs would let that fly, ever, but I’d rather have to wait, say, September 2008 for Day 7, than having to go through another awful season as last one.

If writers & producers need and want more time to make a great season, the least we as fans, but critics too, the least we can do is to support them!
Or if not, shut the hell up when watching the worst season ever. Take your pick.
