Renewal, Cancellation and (almost) pick-up for Entourage, The Riches and The Mentalist

* Vince might be broke, and not sure to get the next role he wants, but even if everything fails I’m sure Ari will figure something out, or E will have to pay the bills for a while, because they’re not going anywhere. Not long after Jeremy Piven received his third consecutive Emmy award (Supporting Actor in Comedy) for his work on the show, HBO announced today that Entourage has been renewed for a sixth season, which will start production in early 2009 and debut over the summer.
* While its new comedies aren’t exactly hits, CBS has at least one series that’s been doing pretty well. Averaging 15.5 million viewers (3.5 on the demo) so far, there’s no doubt that The Mentalist is a hit, so what comes as a surprise isn’t that The Eye is only getting closer to a full season pick-up, it is that they haven’t actually done it yet.
The show hasn’t received a back-nine order (order for 9 more episodes, bringing the total to a full 22-episode season order), only an order for six additional scripts (not episodes). Rumor has it though that the back-nine order could come as early as this week, I’m sure if Tuesday’s episode remains strong with over 15 million viewers it won’t take long for the official announcement…
* Meanwhile on FX we had all forgotten about The Riches, thinking the show was another casualty of the strike, but it’s fate still hasn’t been officially determined by the network. However, Todd Stashwick (Dale Malloy) announced on his personal blog that the show was canceled, except the official press release soon.
