Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone and Dirty Sexy Money all canceled

By fred | November 21, 2008

Pushing DaisiesTechnically they haven’t been canceled, no, not just because ABC was careful not to ever use that word, but also because all three series will complete production of all 13 ordered episodes (Pushing Daisies is already done in fact), but also because the Alphabet only chose not to order more episodes, but should air all the remaining episodes. I guess this is the lesser part of a very sad news.

But the facts remains, Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone and Dirty Sexy Money are all dead, and sadly there’s no magical pie maker to bring them back to life…

Because it is sad to see those shows go, especially - with no offense to the Darlings - for Pushing Daisies and Eli Stone, two shows that were very unique and different than anything else on TV, filled with heart and creativity. Sadly, despite delivering good episodes - Wednesday’s episode of Pushing Daisies was one of the best the show ever did - the rating didn’t follow - same PD episode was a series low.

I don’t even know what else to say but that, looking outside my window I see rain pouring, and I think the world is crying the loss of those unique pieces of television.

Worst part is, the creative minds were obviously not made aware of such news in time, so don’t expect any kind of closure or stories to be wrapped up.

Pushing Daisies has completed its 13-episode order, production of the last episode of Eli Stone is undergoing, while Dirty Sexy Money have only two episodes left to do. All scripts have been written since long, and chances are none of them will end in any kind of satisfying way.

In fact, Kristin Dos Santos got to talk to creator Bryan Fuller and Kristin Chenoweth, the former telling that “[ABC president] Steve McPherson called me and said, ‘We gave it the best shot we could.’ It’s very likely that Pushing Daisies will end after episode 13, which as you know, is a cliffhanger. But we are talking to DC Comics about doing comic books that will wrap up our storylines, and I already have a pitch for a [big-screen] movie ready to go.

Chenoweth added that they “don’t really have a closure. It’s going to leave a lot of our friends wondering. I hope [Bryan Fuller] does [a movie] because there’s nothing like his mind. I often ask him if his brains hurt because there’s so many ideas inside of his head. I would love to do a movie.

I would love it as well, but I don’t see it happening. The show averaged 6.4 million viewers this season and last episode didn’t get 5 million of them, and I don’t see anyone willing to invest all the money a movie would require in such a project. Most likely is Fuller’s idea of continuing the stories into a comic book, which I’m sure some fans will appreciate, but that’s just not the same, not the same at all…
