Pick up and cancellation news: Kath & Kim, Samantha Who?, Gossip Girl, Valentine, Easy Money, One Tree Hill, 90210 and… Melrose Place

By fred | November 2, 2008

Samantha Who?* Excuse me, but I think I just threw up a little in my mouth. Yes, NBC picked up for a full season their latest crap, Kath & Kim, proving once again how much trouble they were in. Either that, or it’s just because the show happens to come from Ben Silverman’s production company Reveille, and since the guy is crazy and clearly loves to put really bad show on the air.

Anyways, the back-nine order is there, and since I seriously doubt either Crusoe - which is bad and performing and worse – or the newly sent to die Lipstick Jungle - which wouldn’t even be doing nicely if on The CW – will get a pick-up, I can only hope Life will get its much-deserved back-nine order. Otherwise, I won’t bother with any new shows on NBC which, based on their new series so far this season, wouldn’t change much anyway for me.

* ABC picked-up Samantha Who? for a full season, as the show continues to perform well and be the second most-watched sitcom after CBS hit Two And A Half Men. Of course, CBS comedy is a rating-hit, while Samantha only has a very strong lead-in in Dancing With The Stars, with a very average retention at best. Should be noted that the Alphabet didn’t order 9 but only 7 more episodes, bringing the season to a shortened 20-episode one, because it needs room for other comedies coming up, like Scrubs, Single With Parents, Better Off Ted or According To Jim.

* According to Nikki Finke, after putting their shows on a planned hiatus, MRC finally realized that nothing could be done. While the word “canceled” isn’t being used, both Valentine and Easy Money have reportedly been put on “permanent hiatus”, a nicer way of saying they’ve been, indeed, canceled. MRC still needs to fill The CW’s Sunday nights for the entire 2008-2009 season, and so is expected to choose replacement soon.

* Speaking of which, The CW loves its shows and don’t want them to end — so expect long seasons. Gossip Girl has been extended to 25 episodes, while One Tree Hill and 90210 have both received a total order for 24 episodes this season.

Also, since they like how 90210 is doing so far, they’re planning to redo a new Melrose Place for next season. Gosh, is there really no one with one bit of imagination and creativity left in TV land ??
