On The Bubble: Is Your Favorite Show Returning ?

By fred | April 17, 2008

Eli StoneMany shows already have been renewed for a new season, and yet probably as many are still waiting for an official statement about their future. Of course, as is always the case in such times, fans are anxious and worry for their favorite shows, especially the ones the network doesn’t seem to like so much, or the ones not doing that great in the ratings, despite being really great shows.

Recently Michael Ausiello compiled a list of shows currently hanging in the balance, giving for each of the their “Odds of Survival” rating, somewhere from 0 (it’s dead) to 10 (it will be back). Here’s that list, plus a few more comments by yours truly…

Let me start with the shows I’m most interested in. And, the bad news first :

Reaper

The bad news: Creatively, it failed to live up to the lofty expectations we had for it after that flawless pilot. And the ratings? Hellish.
The good news: Um, the pilot was really good! And there’s no denying that there’s a decent show in there. Somewhere.
Odds of Survival: 4
I say: WTF!!?? Seriously, I don’t get it, this show is great! And I have to say it again, what the Hell is that BS about how the pilot was great but since then “the show hasn’t been there creatively”, “the show got stuck into formula-mode”, “it failed to live up to expectations” or other crap like that ??

I really don’t get it. The show has not been stuck into any formula, it found ways to get out of it actually, it’s been really fun, it’s always very funny, they even introduced some new demons teaming with Sam, against the Devil possibly, which opened up a lot more doors for future development!

No, I really don’t get it, this is BS. The show did not failed to live up to expectations, if cannot say that unless you didn’t actually watched it. It is a good show, a funny one, and just because there’s a new monster escaped soul each week doesn’t mean it sucks or can’t be good creatively, not every show has to be serialized to be good television!

New Amsterdam

The bad news: The fact that Fox trimmed its initial order for the show doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.
The good news: It’s held up surprisingly well ratings-wise.
Odds of survival: 6
I say: 6 is too much. Fox didn’t really believe in it, and I can see why. In it’s evolution, or lack of, this show is the opposite of Eli Stone. While ABC drama resolved issues that were hurting the show and improved amazingly well, to grow into a very great & likable show, New Amsterdam didn’t do any of that. It stayed the same incredibly flawed show, never moving the plot (or anything) forward, it’s boring, it sucks, and it hasn’t done that well ratings-wise. More importantly, I imagine others are getting tired to come back week after week never to see any evolution.
