New schedule for Lost - Maybe not such a good idea…

By fred | February 13, 2008

LostAs reported a few days ago, and confirmed by the creative minds of Lost (like Carlton Cuse), the plan is to add five more episodes to this season.

But the latest news is that, as many wondered, ABC is indeed planning to move it around. For now Lost airs on Thursdays at 9.00, but that’s only because there’s nothing else to air. Now that the strike is over, ABC plans to bring Grey’s Anatomy back into its usual slot, and will therefore need to move Lost. They are thinking of moving the show right after, at 10.00, hoping that Grey will be a great lead-in, which could benefit Lost.

It may sound like a good idea at first, but I have to say that I have my doubts. I don’t doubt that Grey’s Anatomy will still do great, but I’m not sure if the people watching the medical soap are the same watching Lost. More importantly, don’t we all remember what happened last time Lost aired so late ?

Lost is demanding on its audience, it’s an exhausting show to watch, you can’t “half-watch it”, you need to fully dedicate yourself and the hour to the show, and you can’t be half sleep, or else you won’t get it, you’ll miss things, you just won’t enjoy it. Putting the show back in the 10.00 slot might just mean people will not be watching the show live, but turn to their DVR the next day.

I know ABC is trying to get more viewers, but it might have worked better by putting Lost one hour before, at 8.00, don’t you think ? They would still have some pretty solid Thursdays with Lost at 8.00, Grey’s Anatomy at 9.00, and whatever they want at 10.00 - moving Ugly Betty, planned to be back on Thursdays at 8.00, another day, like Tuesdays or Sundays.

But the Alphabet is betting than Lost at 10.00 will work, thanks to Grey’s Anatomy for lead-in. And if it does, this might become the new lineup for Thursdays next season as well.

In other news : Lost might end after episode 7, and not episode 8 as planned. According to TV Guide, ABC might decide to have the show go on a break for a few weeks after episode 7, keeping episode 8 to start the new batch of shows a month later because episode 7 makes for a better, more logical break.

So we would have 5 more episodes, nothing for a month, and then six episodes. And if it works better that way, as long as we get new episodes and writers can actually end the season (somewhat) like they originally intend to, as long as we actually get a real season finale, it’s all fine by me.
